  1. Greetings,

Maybe this should be in the technology section, but the query is not technology based more mounting based. More specifically on a Superb II dashboard to fit in the gap between the instrument pod and the A Post over the vent.

I'm wondering if anyone has used or is using either of the Garmin brand friction mounts (the beanbag type [Garmin part 010-10908-00]  or better still the "sticky bottom" one [Garmin Part 010-11280-00]) and if you have

    1. are these any good compared to the standard windscreen mount? and
    2. will either fit where I want it to fit? - see above.

I've used a beanbag type from Halfords, but that's quite large and will only fit in the middle of the dash and whilst it works to a point I can't get used to my SatNav being in the middle of the car.

I'm looking at these new mounts for when I use our Garmin 770 for towing the 'van. Unfortunately it's a big b***** and with the windscreen mount it obscures more of the view than I would like. Mounting the family Garmin 50LM satnav there is OK.

    I hope someone can help.

ps - I think I've searched all of the Briskoda forums without finding an answer. Apologies if I've missed something.

  2. Greetings.

Out of curiosity I've worked out my mpg before and after "the Fix" using brim to brim fuelling (ignoring the fillups and mileage when I'm towing the caravan). I keep a record and details of all purchases; sad I know. It's only since retirement.

Please note my journeys without the caravan are split about 55% local (10miles-ish) and 45% "going out" (around 50 miles a time). I only really bought the car for towing & touring with the 'van which account for around 30% of the cars total milage.

Before the fix (approx 12 months ownership) average 35.52 mpg

After the fix (since July 1 2016) 39.5 mpg - MFD usually shows average of between 42 and 46 mpg) On a good run, MFD shows up to 60 mpg. Never seen it above that.

Towing the 'van no real change at around 32 mpg.

  3. Greetings,

My manual, for October 2014 model, states on page 96 under paragraph CAUTION

    Quote

Make sure that transported objects with sharp edges do not damage the following:

    heating elements in the rear window;

    elements of the aerial integrated in the rear window;

Aerial filaments integrated in the rear side windows (Superb Combi).

The aerial bits in the side windows look the same as the heating elements in the rear window. Maybe a connector from these side windows has been dislodged?

For what it's worth, I've never had any problem with reception on my Bolero.

    Hope you sort it soon.

  4. Greetings,

Out of curiosity, have you checked the nose weight of the caravan, either with a proper gauge or a piece of wood and bathroom scales. My Superb towbar has a nose weight of 80kg, which is easy to attain with my 'van. Even with the car packed to the gunnels and 3 people in, the nose seems to alter little if at all.

By the time you've put your gas, awning, pots and pans, beer, slippers etc. into the van it could well bring your nose weight up and level the van.

To find the nose weight of your van, there should be an identification plate riveted to the A Frame - see the manual section A1 I linked to in an above post.

    AndyW

nb - Ref the picture of your setup, could it be the van tilting up slightly is exaggerated by the car tilting slightly downwards - or is that a lens aberration?

Just come across this discussion, may be of interest

  5. I agree with Pesmog. Looking at this video your wheel height seems normal and seems to show the nose up a bit, certainly the horizontal stripes seem a little off with the scenery horizontals.

Do you have a user manual? If not try this. seems the top of the tow ball has to be 16" from the floor.

Came across this - don't know if it's still running. They may have an answer(?)

Fleurette now seem to solely make Motorhomes but maybe it's worth an email to them (Google search, French company?) Sorry can't be any more help.

  6. Greetings

It's been over 5 months now since I had my car "done" and I can honestly say that, apart from the car seems to run smoother, I've not noticed any change in the vehicle's performance even when towing the caravan (in fact slightly better mpg towing strangely).

Now, it seems that some people have been through the process without mishap and are presumably happy while others are, shall we say, slightly disappointed.

Why mine de-fix went without a hitch I don't know. The only thing I can think of is that the engine in my car (2.0L cr140 ea189 car production date mid August 2014) is somehow different to others. I trawled many pages, posts and sites (but soon got bored) without finding an answer.

So the question I'm asking is - "Is my engine different to others"? Did they modify it because of the new engine coming out a few months later? Is it engines manufactured/used before production date Aug 2014 that are having difficulties and if so are there any engines suffering after production date Aug 2014?

    Yes I know that's 3 questions - sorry - but I am curious.

  7. Greetings,

I alluded to this problem slightly off topic here - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/400823-any-ideas-when-the-emission-cheat-refits-might-start/page-2#entry4675548 - but just lately it's got worse.

I've now read virtually everything written on this and other forums, but nothing seems to be quite the same as how the problem has evolved for me (apologies if I've missed something) so here goes:

Virtually every time lately, when the estate's boot lid is shut (gently or heavily) when the engine starts so does the rear wiper wiping as though it's raining i.e. one wipe every few seconds. Obviously it's turned off at the stalk. When it's wiping like this, the washers will not work - perversely neither will the front wipers or washers. If I turn the engine off for a couple of minutes all USUALLY returns to normal i.e. wipers and washers work when I want them to.

Now it's sometimes inconvenient to start, stop, wait and start again. and I've found 3 ways so far to prevent the rear wiper from doing it's own intermittent wipe:-

Method 1 - accelerate hard in low gear for a few seconds (a quick shot of electricity?) but this method is not always possible say on a car park or similar

Method 2 - hit some potholes, preferably at low speed (indication of faulty lid catch?) which is extraordinarily easy on the roads by me

Method 3 - push the stalk down as though washing the rear window and hold it for at least 30 seconds

So having shown the wiper who's boss with the above methods and it's parked itself the washers won't work front or rear occasionally neither will the wipers. After a journey, when I start the engine again all is well (usually - I've probably jinxed it now writing about it). It's all a tad annoying.

If anyone has any ideas what the reason(s) may be I'd like to here them. I've got a service due in the next couple of weeks so no doubt this problem could well be discussed and I'd like to be armed with a few ideas in case they fob me off with the old British Leyland / Rover excuse that "they build them like that". Or is it all a plot like some have discovered here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/404938-its-falling-apart/?

    AndyW

nb - Strangely the key fob window trick (open all the windows, press and hold the lock button on the key fob to both lock and shut the windows) seems to prevent the problem for a few days no matter how hard or soft I shut the lid. I find it all very odd.

  8. Greetings,

Do you have any CD's in the unit? and if so are any of them the first time you've put it/them in the unit? or is one of them a homemade cd with a paper label on (home burned cd's with paper labels on have crippled many a car cd player - my previous Honda and my mates Lexus to name but two - as the "thickness" is comparatively much more than a commercial cd and they seem to occasionally get stuck and not change or eject without dismantling the unit)

If the answer to all is NO then I'm sorry but I've exhausted my ideas. Hope you sort it soon.

    AndyW.

  9. Why did I have it done? Good question. I thought about this since the scandal broke. I read virtually everything on this board (I did eventually get bored), I read everything Google could find, I spoke to my old contacts in car manufacturing I know from my time supplying to car plants. All the info given was (and probably stiil is), in my opinion, at best speculation and at worst prevarication. There was little of substance. I decided to go for it.

It's certainly not a legal/mot requirement at the moment. The DoT certainly seem to be happy as far as I can tell, because VW et al are sorting out the problem,

As for Drive the and Vehicle Standards agency, they say they are "the government agency responsible for monitoring vehicle safety recalls and defects in Great Britain". We all know this is not a recall, safety or otherwise, and so is not a legal requirement BUT it could be classed as a defect, in which case could the DaVS make it a legal requirement at some stage? Although probably not an MOT requirement.

This is obviously pure speculation on my part, very much like a lot of the bumph that's been written - again in my opinion..

As I've said before, my car is going as well as it did before, other problems are nothing to do with the software issue.

  10. Greetings,

As stated a couple of posts above, I've been away and after 10 days towing the 'van, I can only say that (psychological or not) the towing felt the same as before both in general feel and acceleration times.

According to the MFD, driving with the 'van (around 1150kg) averaged 32 mpg and touring with just the wife (slightly less weight) averaged 61 mpg - total MFD average for the holiday 42 mpg and brim to brim (3 fill-ups) a fraction over 40 mpg. Based on previous similar journeys, the fuel consumption in not worse but better by just under 4 mpg on total trip.

One thing I did notice, and it could be me being lazy because the weather was quite warm to put it mildly and the aircon was working overtime, was that I stalled the car a couple of times in traffic WITHOUT the van on the back. I've not done that for a long time. The car seems to want a couple more revs to get going than it used to, but then don't we all?

I've read on other posts about the car being more noisy after the "fix". I hadn't noticed it but now I've read that it may be noisier I'm wondering whether it is. I think it does sound different but that is no doubt because I usually have the radio/CD/SDCard playing and, to test if it's more noisy I turned the media off. Sounds the same to me with my normal driving conditions i.e. the media on. So happy days.

To sum up, in my opinion, the fix hasn't done me any harm, the car I'm not certain about but it seems to have survived and maybe perked it up a bit. Time will tell.

    AndyW

nb - hopefully not related, but the rear wiper (combo) seems to have developed a mind of it's own - wiping when the engine starts, but only after the lid has been opened then shut. It usually stops after a few wipes, but it's annoying on a dry and dusty window for obvious reasons. Also while this is happening the washers don't work but come back after a mile or so. I've quickly searched the forum and couldn't find anything related and still being in holiday mode unfortunately I can't be a***d. If it's there I apologise - If someone can direct me I'd be grateful.

  11. I believe the reason it's taken so long to start releasing the "fix" is because they wanted to make sure each update applied had absolutely no adverse effects on the vehicle.

It's nice to see they're now adopting the "belt and braces" approach.

It might be worth a note that with each emissions related software update each customer receives:

    -A free vehicle health check

    -A free wash and vac

-A free courtesy car during repair

-A free Skoda goodie bag which includes a Skoda pen, notebook, thermo mug, golf umbrella and some other small items

    So it's not all bad!

    Greetings,

If James is there (or anyone else knows) can you confirm what's written above, not the wash or courtesy car but health check and goodie bag, Is it a Skoda thing or individual garage thing?

I've just had my Superb done at the local Skoda place and got the wash - full comments here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/400823-any-ideas-when-the-emission-cheat-refits-might-start/page-2

Just curious really, but I am sharpening my communicating with people skills!

  12. We had a letter from Skoda this week saying the fix was ready.

It's going in on the 9th to have the fix installed. 30 minute job they said.

    Greetings,

Mine was booked in for this morning. At the time of booking they quoted 30 to 60 minutes, as per the letter, and agreed to wait for the deed to be done but when I got there they said 90 minutes. I actually got the keys to the car back after 130 minutes.

Ok they had washed and valeted the car (as per 's post here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/403832-emissions-cheat-latest/) but as far as I know no health check was done (although to be fair I was so glad to get out of the place I forgot to ask - they didn't mention it ONLY the wash) and certainly there is no Skoda Goodie Bag. As for a courtesy car, as I didn't book one when I booked the car in, they hadn't got one for me.

So BEWARE of a garage saying 30 to 60 mins as it dould be easily double that. Maybe it's just me  and i was unlucky. Maybe James is wrong (although he obviously has inside knowledge).about the goodies. Maybe I'm just feeling sorry for myself growing old by 2 hours and doing nothing except watching daytime TV.

As for the car now after the refit/map/program, it seems at the moment to be no better or (more importantly) no worse. I've done my usual drive round of around 30 miles mixed travelling trying to emulate the usual driving style, and fuel consumption according to MFD is the same as usual. Now it could be psychological, or indeed there was a fuel problem before the software update, but when I used to accelerate form about 5mph with foot to floor in second gear there was a slight time lag before the engine picked up. That seems to have gone. Still, I'm away pulling a caravan next week so that will tell all.

    AndyW

  13. Greetings,

Got my (UK) letter today. Interesting reading:-

    • "The software upgrades the engine management system in your affected vehicle by implementing elements such as an enhanced fuel injection pattern. The software update applies these measures without adverse effects to the service life of the engine and its components. To achieve this, we are using advances in diesel combustion technology which were not available at the time your vehicle was manufactured"

    • "SKODA has worked closely with the relevant, independent authorities to test extensively the software update for your vehicle. Following the completion of this testing, l can confirm that there will be no change to your vehicle's engine performance, maximum torque or noise levels. The performance data already published for your vehicle, including fuel consumption values and CO2 emissions, will also remain unchanged"

I've not booked it yet as Holidays are imminent, but I will do in a couple of weeks or so, by which time no doubt most of you will have had "the letter" and indeed had the deed done.

  14. Greetings

So, let me get this straight!

The speedo (etc etc) works in a nonlinear zone that is different in mph to kmh that can be loaded with different speed-angle table for the speedometer needle position which is relatively well understood (thanks psycholist) and customisable however the hardest part is getting the eeprom data from the cluster (thanks langers2k).

And I can only totally agree with chimaera, mainly because I'm well out of my depth now and swimming in the sea of ignorance.

I remember my Triumph Herald, a truly high tech piece of machinery. I never understood the Speedo (etc etc) in that as it never worked. Funnily enough it never worked in my Austin 1100 either. My Honda always registered 7 mph BELOW actual (according to my SatNav) and My Vauxhall cavalier  never got the chance to work as it was written off by the delivery driver on his way to deliver it to me.

As long as I can keep the needle in my Superb at on or below 10 minutes past the hour I shall be happy. (Aaah happy - I remember that (Thanks to Basil Fawlty))

    AndyW

nb - Having read this reply I feel it can be interpreted as taking the ****. I won't rewrite it though. Honestly, no sarcasm intended. I meant what I said before. Genuine respect to all who design cars (software cheats, warts and all) and even greater respect for "ordinary" people that understand what it's all about and what can (and can't) be done about it.

  15. This is relatively well understood and customisable, the hardest part is getting the eeprom data from the cluster.

The O2 FL has linear increments so it could be a simple case of switching the dial faces over and fixing the scales. It'll mostly depend on warning light positions in the middle of the dials.

Wow. All this has put my theory of "head bobbing" to shame :envy:

I must admit I hadn't given my initial post much thought, just wrote what I felt. I never thought that there was scientific fact behind my "discovery". Genuinely Interesting.

    AndyW

  16. Greetings

g_tee - As you would expect, overtaking in 6th gear is sluggish but OK if you're not in a rush, 5th is much better, 4th is (for me) more than adequate but if you're going to use 4th at speed turn OFF the consumption figures in the display. I totally agree with psycholist's comments - the car is so quiet and easy to drive a "no licence" situation can easily beckon if not careful.

psycholist - I knew the speedo (etc etc) would have a scientific name :D  I don't really want to change the driving position as it's taken me 8 months to find the right one for me (no electric seat unfortunately). Good point about the speed limit warning though. As I say, I only found this "quirk" today and I must admit the SLW never entered my mind - thanks.

    AndyW

  17. Greetings,

The way I have my seat and steering wheel set up just obscures the 70 on the speedo (meter that etc etc) and so I know roughly what my speed is without head bobbing to find out.

Today, on a rare washing and polishing exercise, I noticed the speedo (meter etc etc) has standard gradations up to 80, After that the next number was 100 then 120 then 140 then 160 (mph that is)

Now I've never had a car with a speedo (etc etc) labelled like this and I was more than mildly surprised to see it . Should I have been stopped I don't think the excuse that "I thought I was doing about 85" would hold water when in fact I was (allegedly) doing almost 100mph.

I assume that the same speedo is used in all variants of Superb (and indeed all VW offshoots) to keep costs down. Fair enough I should have looked at ALL possible problem areas when I bought the car, and indeed thought I had, but finding this worried me. How many times have I been in the automatic loss of licence zone thinking I was doing 90 when I was doing 100 (ish)? Well, NONE obviously!!

It would have been my fault I know, and I must start to "head bob" even especially when enjoying a drive on a quiet road /motorway. I just thought I'd warn anyone else out there if they hadn't noticed this anomaly.

Still, mustn't grumble. The car's running great and it's difficult to keep under 90 - or is that 100? Although I do manage it - HONESTLY.

    AndyW

  18. Greetings,

I keep mine (most of the time) in the cubby hole under the passenger seat. Just feel around at the front of the base of the seat and there is an opening catch to the box (Oooh, no missus) - thanks to Frankie Howerd.

    Hope you find it

    AndyW

Of course, if you can't find it then a quick Google can find one. I know links to various manuals are on this forum, should you not find yours you could try https://carmanuals2.com/get/skoda-superb-2012-owner-s-manual-37671 it's where I got an electronic copy of my manual.

Just noticed I seem to have replied to a duplicate post - apologies

  19. Update 3

Greetings and apologies for not advising the outcome sooner,

To cut a long story short, after much to-ing and fro-ing of emails and photos between dealer and Skoda it was decided the problem as it stood lay with a control box and the light switch itself (which.apparently has fused links inside it??). When these were replaced the lighting "sort of" worked - their words not mine. Much scratching of heads at dealer and (apparently) at Skoda.

The dealer kept the car for a couple of days (I used one of their courtesy cars) and eventually they found the problem. It was to do with the front accessory socket - cigarette lighter socket in the old days. From what I could gather there is a plastic cover on the underside to prevent contact with metal creating shorting etc. which wasn't there on my vehicle; or at least had come free. This was replaced and voilà, all is well.

This work was all done under warranty - I can't fault the dealer or Skoda for the way they handled this. To be honest I didn't ask for too many details about the problem as 1) I was just happy to have a fully working car and 2) I wanted to get out of the dealers before they changed their mind and decided to charge me.

  20. Update 2

The company that fitted the towbar looked at it today. They disconnected the dedicated wiring loom and removed the coding from the system i.e reverting the car back to OEM spec. The fault is still there!

They connected their coder to the system (getting technical now - I don't fully understand so bear with me if it doesn't make sense) and it kept showing a lighting technical fault even with (theortically) no towbar attached.

The fitter spoke direct to my Skoda Garage and it's booked in with them for Wednesday.

    AndyW

ps - never had this problem with either of my Hondas or my Rover 75. However the Rover 75 had a catalogue of errors all of it's own but it was a nice car.

pps - At this moment "The Superb" is STILL the best car I've ever bought.

Don't know what comes after pps - Do I really need this hassle for the two LED's and illumination for the overhead switches? YES, I've paid for it and I want it.
