  1. they will do it for the same price,, however, I wont do it there as they are lying to me, putting me in a position that I am stupid? I can afford it but I will do it with independent garage, found a guy already he said that he fitted this kit many times. If they do not accept the issue, it means they wont accept if sth happens to the engine connected with this issue as well, so I do not wanna pay the dealer while they do not have any `benefit` on changing it with them.
  2. and final point - dealer checked and the chain is stretched in limits as they say - they said that they can change tensioner as it might be causing the issue which put a smile on my face :) Told them not to touch the car anymore, I will pick it tomorrow and wont see any dealer/service with VW group logo.
  3. Update from me Got a call from the dealer and feeling like trying to put me in awkward position - i suppose they de trying to ignore paying for the whole change They said that they did not hear any sound which is impossible when you cold start despite the fact that i showd them this video below that the car is screaming for first seconds and aftsr this video yesterday they told " yeah this sounds like death rattle" Without any exception this sound is always there when you start the car after 3-4 hours. https://youtu.be/1rgKyJcRsu0 I angrily asked them to check how stretched the chain is- i am hundred percent sure that i will get similar answer like xman Lost hope with Skoda as well - will not go to any authorized dealer anymore for Octavia and will be big fight with them tomorrow i will tell them they are lying through their ... Yoy can guess how angry i am.. Skoda can also expect a very kind email from me like I did for Renault before :) Will change the whole thing in independent Vag garage that i found
  4. okay, thanks xman, did not know that, thought it might have been like a standard one - did not wanna bother with high labour costs in the future just for that - as they always suggest to change the pump along with the cam belt
  5. by the way, while they are taking out everything I suppose it will be good to change some other things such as water pump - any other thing that you would suggest?
  6. I have left the card and asked today this question to the dealer - after this conversation. I was told it is around 4 hours of work, I have double checked the price and 355 GBP is for whole kit including their work and VAT. There will be additionally oil and oil filter change. They will keep the car whole night today and check tomorrow morning, and then call me and after all they will call Skoda for their participation. Let`s see what will come up!
  7. I believe that xman, minimoke and I, we are sure that it is about 1.2 TSI :)
  8. Agreed with xman, i can afford that amount but why to pay for wv group s mistake? they did not recall these cars it doesnt matter that there were a lot of them affected and after warranty is out, they want to avoid all costs related to that
  9. That is sad!! And you know what, I remember the old timer cars with classic engines (without turbo, supercharger, dpf or whatever) were maybe not performing well but they were with little less issues. When I check for cars right now - if I would like to change, I can hardly find something, mostly there are a lot of common faults discussed on the internet which are expensive to fix - especially when your budget is limited.
  10. What I see from what people said here, it is not just about the chain but the design error, the cars that are produced in 2012 have updated chain however, the latest kit 03F198158B should be fitted to it in order to be sure that she will not give you any trouble. I went for the second dealer today which has good comments for their service department, they said that they know the problem (of course :) ) and they can fit the kit xman mentioned - 03F198158B. They asked for 355 GBP plus oil and oil filter. I told them that first I want to leave the car so they can check how stretched it is and diagnose the issue and asked them if they can contact Skoda to see if they will participate in cost. They said as the warranty is out since last February - they suppose Skoda will not accept - I told them the warranty is out but the customer should not be the one to pay for the mistake of VW Group. If Skoda says no to them, I will contact personally with Skoda and cry out. It would be good to get something at least around 50% for their own mistake. Leaving the car next Wednesday.
  11. Thank you xman, good for you :) I suppose mine can be little more expensive, I was quoted 475 GBP with vat in previous dealer just for cambelt change which is a terrible amount (the one which rejected this kit 03F198158B ) If I will be able to wake up early tomorrow, I will head for the second dealer before work, talk to them and I will also try my luck about Skoda`s contribution which I do not have much hope - I am sure they will say that it is in limits like your case and the car has 5 years. Exactly, battery seems to be better now, last few days it was not too much freezing This morning when I came whole car was frozen again (it was showing -18), she got started without any issue but it took me 15 minutes to clean her and costed me frozen fingers :) I am trying not to touch the doors other than driver`s side :) she has been okay - once I got problem with right passenger door on the back, used silicone spray - but I will take your advice, I will use it before cold starts next time. And the worst thing is the car looks like it was used for off road racing :) cannot wash it for weeks because of minus degrees and looks like I will not be able to in next few weeks as well
  12. Thanks a lot for your comments guys As for the oil, Skoda`s last servicing was done in July before i bought her - i believe they are putting the oil taking into account the hard winter conditions I serviced Honda in authorized service as well however i doubt what they put in it after this winter. I used to put 0w 30 full syntethic for my 1.5 megane dci in previous years which did not give any trouble Today was comparatively better around -10 both started good however i recognized the batteries were not perfect after a few freezing nights - will have to check it, thinking about selling Civic though 1.4 idsi has very poor performance with acceleration however i do not know what else we can buy for the wife :( And weird but happened - the day before ( it was -17 at night ) there was ice on the windshield from the inside and too much steam - i always turn the heater to windows with Octavia during these cold days - might be some leak somewhere or about the heating system, we will see. Finally will have time to take her for authorized service Problems i have As xman knows - rattling sound ( i have checked with one authorized here they refused to use the kit you mentioned) Steam and ice on the windshield And kind of weird sound when i turn the key to start the car when it is below 5 celsius sth like sound of a belt which i suspect it could be starter motor If this second Skoda authorized service also refuses to use the last kit for timing issue, i will check with and independant garage i found which is specialized for wolkswagen group - if they are also not able to, i will have to sell skoda despite the fact i realy like the performance.
  13. Generally around winter time, at night here the worst weather is around -5. -10 degrees, it goes down like this week so rare during the winter, and believe me around -20 is extremely difficult. I was in gas station yesterday to put some liquid for windshield, put my gloves off for 1 minute and could not move my fingers after that. Before Poland, I was living in a city where the lowest temperature was around -1, -2 , after 5 years here, I got used to it. As for block heathers, I do not use - even if I had one, I would not know where to plug it in, and I suppose I will not need them as these degrees come so rarely. I try not to force the cars at all during these times, let`s hope they won`t have any trouble after all. Last night was freezing as well, I will see today if the ladies will start
  14. Last night in south part of Poland had a freezing night, after that today I wanted to clean and start both my Octavia 1.2 TSI from 2011 and my wife`s Civic 1.4 from 2008 which she failed to start when she tried before me. When I went next to the cars it was around -17 Celsius, gave it a try with Civic first, 4 seconds and no go- gave it some gas and finally around 6-7 seconds it started with a very loud noise - made a tour trying to get the engine warm a little - I also felt like the clutch was so tough which got better after 5 minutes of driving. Then I came for Skoda with little less hope :) Turned the ignition two times on off and then turned the key - 2 seconds and we are on! She started! After all the rattling noise issues, she put a smile on my face :) I took a drive around 5 miles using it less than 2500 rpm, got it warm and turned back, she did not make any weird sound, lag or etc. The doors were frozen though, it was hard to open driver`s door, I did not force my luck with the other ones. I will try to write a short review of how I feel with the car after 4 months of drive with 1.2 TSI, which actually I am mostly happy with however with question marks in the head.
  15. Hello everyone, I have just contacted one dealer here and I was told that the kit which is fit my car is 03F198158A - which I also had very bad comments about their service department, I tried to push them but they insisted that the kit 03F198158B is not fit with mine (10/2011 built) - now you can understand why I hate dealers but for this case I have to go for them I will try the second dealer soon, I am not able to leave the car due to some emergency I have these weeks. I was able to make a video about the sound when I turn the key, the sound is not so strong but it is audible from 7th second to 8th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKUM6AsCDxg&feature=youtu.be And popped the hood, tractor sound I am supposing this is normal for these engines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHrXcDxbv8E&feature=youtu.be
  16. I always leave the car in neutral (manual one) when parked however, whenever I start the car I also have the same thing, it idles around 1200 rpm for around 30 secs (when the weather is nice around 20-25 Celsius but the interesting thing is when i start it during the cold mornings it keeps the rev around 900 rpm - like the cases being told here.
  17. Thanks minimoke understood clearly I am so disappointed that we have to pay for VW group s mistake - and it is a huge mistake which causes car to be immobile. My next car wont be from VW group for sure, i suppose i ll go for Toyota. They are not also perfect but at least they seem to admit their mistakes and make recall for important issues
  18. A car after warranty, I do not think they will care if my problem is solved or not, with dealers, my experience they always try to fob you, maybe I am exaggerating but I did not have good experience until now. My service is very small and local one, they do their job good and do not charge much but from what you said above, I see that better is to go for the dealer for this. I will try to do next month and give update how it worked. Thanks a lot again, really appreciated!
  19. By the way just to add, the service intervals are so long, I was surprised when I saw in the book that next service should be at 86000 km when I bought the car. Looks like the previous owner did not pass the limit of 13-14 k miles between the 3 servicing he had. I cannot even imagine how the oil may look like after 20k miles.
  20. Thanks a lot Minimoke. Looks like from yours and Xman`s experience, the issue is really disturbing and sounds like I will feel uncomfortable every time I turn the key. I am checking now the latest kit you have mentioned, here in Poland from some website and it is worth around 90-100 quid when I want to buy it myself. And I have some small car mechanic that they can do it for me, however I am a little scared that they are a little old-fashioned, if they will be able to take care of the change properly. They will ask for around 100-150 pounds to fit these I suppose, so it will come for 250 quid. When I asked the authorized service, they mentioned some amount around 500 pounds with parts and the work and I am not sure if they will use the latest kit. I am thinking it is better to change all than sitting on kneedles, sounds like a time bomb. Now, it is time to decide with whom to change it. It is a lot of money to do it in Skoda authorized service but the thing is that I will not be able to get anything from Skoda if I do not change it there.
  21. xman thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. I definitely understand that feeling when they gave you this comment with the measurement, I had a lot of issues with authorized services in 2 different countries with different brands. They will ignore and deny the issue as long as they can. I was just reading from this Italian one (I suppose you already saw it) but it sounds like the it is not up-to-date http://a1.audi.club.forumfree.it/?t=69339806 Somewhere at the end, they mentioned also that all these updated kits were to solve the issue permanently, and there were reports about jumped chain cases and so on. I was so tired of French cars and with their problems. Finally I thought I got something technically without `any critical issue` , I see that I was wrong. I just sold my Megane 2 and bought the Octavia a few weeks ago and we have found out by luck these threads about the cam chain issue on the internet after a few days. I was about to buy a Toyota but then I decided to buy Octavia to have something younger. I do not trust in car mechanics easily, it looks like I will have a long run with Skoda dealer here in Poland for long time because of this. However, I am not sure if this sound i hear is the rattling sound as I have never used any car with cam chain. This is kind of powerful sound coming for 1-2 seconds, maybe I will make a video to show you how it is. I hope it will not but if it does, I cannot imagine how crazy I will be, we do not earn this money so easy And most important point here is : there should have been a recall for this.
  22. Sorry to bring this topic backs but i have doubts about my new car after reading these failures I ve got my octavia which has biult date of late october 2011 with 1.2 tsi engine, and it is one of the engines whic had the uptated chain from the tpi which was shared in first pages The car is around 40k miles and all time serviced in skoda I hear some sound during the cold start gor a few seconds but after that all is okay I will book somw time to chech the cam and the tensioner with skoda as i do not havs the chance to leave it soon and their schedule is not fit for me Just curious if this issue is also valid for the engines eith modified chain? Would you suggest to change whole or just tensioner?
  23. Exactly that is annoying. For me, I just found out when I occasionally open this auto mode while driving, after that when I turn on the ignition this happens then I change the lever into 2 modes and it stops, so for now okay. I also see similar topics for Yeti, Superb here and in different forums. I have a feeling it might also be about the programming of this wiper modes, but hard to understand. I do not want to spend money to change the motor if nothing will change as after buying the car, not keen on spending much more money. My biggest concern right now is, what I read about this timing chain and tensioner, I will try to inactivate rear wiper before winter if it continues like this.
  24. Thanks guys for the useful comments Mike, Mine is hatchback, I do not keep the wipers on auto mode, they are always closed, it started to happen when I tried the lever to see how it works - I have only spent 10 days with the car. So, I turn the ignition, (wiper lever is on` off` mode) rear wiper makes one sweep up and down and stops. This happens when I put it to auto mode for some time when it is raining - the front ones I use - rear one occasionally) I have played with that to understand if I did something wrong. When this happens (this 1 time auto swipe) , I turn the ignition, the auto sweep happens, then I put the lever to auto mode for a few seconds and then to the fast mode - and put the lever to `off` position. Then I stop the engine and turn on the ignition - then no more auto swiping! So weird, I would not care but I have to - generally I have to park under the trees and they leave a lot of hard stuff on the car and windows, so when it sweeps the wiper gets terribly dirty. And in Poland winters are so cold, if this will happen when we will have -10, -15 degrees and the windows are frozen, probably the wiper will be easily destroyed and I will have to change it all the time. If it is like even after changing the motor if it still does the same, I would consider to inactivate it somehow. I drove Megane 2 saloon for long time without any rear wiper for years. Last week I wanted to go for a small local garage to check it- when I went there to show the issue- it did not happen ) While I wanted to come to work this morning, turned the ignition and same thing happened, I did the same that I explained above - auto mode - fast mode and `off` turrned the engine off and turned the ignition once more and again it stopped happening
  25. Llanigraham, thanks I will do that, preferred to write here as the problem is the same and I suppose that the mechanism is also similar or even maybe the same. Just to give an update, I opened auto wipers for the front and then rear in the morning as it was raining then I wanted to go to a small mechanic shop close to my house but when I tried to show them what was happening, the problem did not occur again, when I turn the key for ignition, now , rear wiper is not making one full tour after ignition. There is something I am missing about hot this is programmed.
