New to Superb II FL from Octavia III - is this normal?
Rkdee replied to mikemanpl's topic in Skoda Superb Mk II (2008-2015)
Dealer mechanics all do that. Replace before repair. -
Nah, the tyres are virtually new. And the noise is there from about 10kph
-
It’s a 170 4x4 tdi

I’ve started to notice a noise when accelerating at low speed. It’s not apparent when cruising, or decelerating or sitting and revving the engine. It sounds like blowing over an open bottle, a constant “woo” noise. Both my front wheel bearings have been replaced. My water pump and timing belt were replaced. My aircon fan has been replaced. I’ve had a look for leaks on the intake piping, there is nothing obvious. I thought it might be the turbo echoing around the cavity where the aircon intake and wiper motors are located. The sound is more noticeable when the engine is warm. If I accelate hard the sound does not get louder, but it’s still there. Is it a noise every mkii has and I shouldn’t worry?

I am happy to say the Superb coped well in the Aussie west, sitting on 120kmph in 37c heat. I was comfortable and the temp gauge never moved, even after the locusts clogged everything up. Camped in the back. My 173cm height fitted remarkably well.

I cannot believe where they managed to get into. All through the engine bay, trapped behind the mudguards. But I've sorted a solution for future trips... Aluminium 4x8mm mesh, using 4x screws and 15x2mm cable ties

Decided to see if the noise "it's not a wheel bearing" had actually been fixed by replacing 2 wheel bearings. Pretty confident that its fixed.
-
Water pump failed. But had all belts done anyway.
-
Mine failed at 5yrs and 70000km
-
I have had both front wheel bearings done which fixed a noise that both VW and Skoda mechanics said was not wheel bearings. They had done the usual checks for play and said definitely not. (It was rhythmic pulsating though)
-
It is literally exactly as Sanmart described. 5mins, most of which is getting your body into an awkward position.
-
Turns out it was a wheel bearing. Both fronts replaced, noise gone.
-
Not the wheel bearing. But replacing it helped reduce overall noise.
-
Skoda have now decided it is the wheel bearings ffs!!! Passenger front apparently. Amazingly the side I picked 3months ago when I first approached them about the noise. ****s!!! Be funny if it still doesn’t fix the noise.

The Superb II & FL Picture thread

With it’s smaller 17” wheels from a 2020 Octavia and 225/50r17 tyres. so much more refined than the 225/40r18 that were standard. look at the difference in the sidewall! no crashing over road imperfections now. -
This is how it looks with the new wheels and tyres. You can see the gap between the tyres and guards is smaller. There is about 2cm when the wheels are fully turned

Given mine is a 4x4 “Outdoor” the 40 profile tyre seemed a really strange choice, only confirmed by the 50 profile ride. In Australia you would expect this model to be capable of taking on rough dirt roads. Subaru Outback’s of similar vintage have 55 profiles. Other SUV types also have more tyre wall.
-
Just listened to the YouTube versions. It appears the compression algorithm has filtered out the noise FFS!!! Its so much clearer on my phone.
-
My water pump just failed. Do you think that could be the cause of the noise/vibration? $1k for water pump and timing belt. 🥺
-
This is a better recording https://youtu.be/oXF0DsokEeA

That may be so. However, the ride quality is amazing compared to the 18” and road noise on coarse chip is amazingly better. I can look forward to further improvements at my next tyre change. the 8.5kg of sound dampening I added prior to changing the wheels is probably helping keep the actual tyre noise from penetrating the cabin. The new wheels and tyres are soaking up the coarse chip road vibrations

Pirelli Dragons 225/40r18 changed to Pace PC10 225/50r17 - they seem quite soft in the sidewall and are rated at 72db from what I could find. Just cheapies because I didn't want to spend too much money for no return. Instead got great return for minimal expense. Wheels and tyres combined AU$650. I would normally spend at least that amount on tyres alone. And very easy to recoup the expense by selling the 18" as the tyres and wheels are virtually new.
