  3. Hi thought this might interest all. How one garage owner is slashing fuel prices by using ... chip fat By Chris Brooke Last updated at 2:18 AM on 29th May 2008 Comments (0) Add to My Stories At 95p a litre, it has to be the cheapest forecourt diesel in the country. But the secret of one tiny garage's bargain price is not tax evasion or dodgy accountancy. It's all thanks to fish and chips. The business turns used cooking oil from fast food restaurants into biodiesel capable of running cars safely and efficiently. It is sold from a single pump and the steady stream of regular and grateful customers all swear by its reliability. Economy option: A driver fills up at the garage, which is having to cut its opening hours due to huge demand More... Darling opens door to freeze on fuel duty amid growing confusion about road tax U-turn £2billion wiped off second-hand car market as credit crunch hits low income earners Demand at the garage outside York has pushed prices up in recent weeks to 94.9p a litre, but that's still about 35p less than traditional diesel. As word spreads about the garage's location, demand increases. The business can no longer make enough biodiesel to cope. Its phones are red hot from hauliers asking about supplies and it has cut opening times from six days to 'two or three days a week' to ensure it does not run out. It does not need any free advertising. When the Mail visited the company yesterday the manageress was distraught about the implications of national publicity. 'It's a nightmare at the moment, we just can't cope with demand as it is,' said Sally. 'The phone is constantly ringing and as you can see we are very busy with customers who already know us. We definitely don't need any more people turning up.' They keep their cheap diesel as secret as possible, relying on word of mouth and a single sign showing the price, which is partially obscured from view by a hedge. The company has collected used cooking oil for 20 years and until recent years cleaned it up and sold it on for industrial use. Now it sells about 60,000 litres of biodiesel a month to motorists. Vans tour the region collecting used cooking oil from fish and chip shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels and schools. The oil is free as they are effectively providing a waste collection service to caterers. Back at the site near York, which looks more like a farmyard than a garage or business, the oil is put into a large tank and filtered to remove bits of food. The biodiesel contains 80 to 90 per cent vegetable oil, 10 to 20 per cent alcohol and around 1 per cent is a 'catalyst'. 'The process takes a couple of days,' said Sally. 'The alcohol provides the spark to make it go. Our biodiesel can be used to run any diesel engine. It is reliable and good quality and you don't need to add anything, though some motorists prefer half cooking oil and half normal diesel in their cars.' The company has to pay VAT and tax of 30.35p a litre, 20p less than for normal diesel. The customers certainly seem happy. Engineer Simon Melton said: 'I've been coming here for a couple of years. Most people say this kind of fuel knackers the engine, but my Audi runs smoothly and I've never had a problem.' Malcolm Jackson, 58, who drives a car repair truck, said: 'It's usually £100 to fill this vehicle up and it only costs £60 here.' There is a booming cottage industry of people making their own 'home brew' biodiesel from waste cooking oil. With the help of special equipment and the addition of a several chemicals, anyone can do it. The cost is said to be only 15p a litre. Rules state you can make up to 2,500 litres a year for personal use without telling the taxman. Magic mix: The single biodiesel pump The exhaust smell can vary and depends on the type of oil. Some users say it gives off a 'chip shop odour'. The borough of Richmond, in South West London, this month put out a tender for a £3.5million contract to run its 300 council vehicles on recycled vegetable oil for the next three years. The council believes it could save £100,000 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by hundreds of thousands of tons. UK fuel suppliers are now legally obliged to ensure that at least 2.5 per cent of the petrol and diesel they sell comes from crops. Most diesel now contains a small percentage of biodiesel, usually made from soya or rapeseed oil. But few garages sell diesel made almost entirely from vegetable oil. Tesco garages sell diesel which typically has about 5 per cent biofuel. The York garage's contains up to 80 per cent vegetable oil. The first diesel engine, built in August 1893, was powered by peanut oil. But during the 1920s manufacturers altered their engines to use the lower viscosity of petrodiesel. Revenue and Customs declined to comment on an individual business, but said tax rates had changed to 'encourage' biofuels similar to conventional diesel. 4. Its the same here in Croatia my friends. Fuel up everyday, not as high as yours at present but getting there. Diesel fuel was around 70p lt 3 months ago. now its 10kn or a pound in your currency. No sign of it halting either, and our average salaries are lower also by half, however some cost are much lower like housing, rents, beer etc, but it still hurts. ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tour Combi.

  7. We have now updated our fuel findings a little, on the 4x4. From new until first service at 15000km we found average was Fuel 5,90 lts diesel -100km that's 45.73 miles per gal , 80% motorway driving . Now with 21000km and car nearly 6 months old, ( more fuel awareness) 80% motorway using 5.6lt-100km that's 48.25 mpg. Figure's taken are average's only, so our average fuel consumption is now slightly less using same roads, only change is winter to summer tyres. When we are in a hurry speed/fuel goes up, if not, we THINK!! more about the fuel saving and a 4.5 hr motorway trip becomes 5hrs sometimes. We are happy anyway with all that Skoda have given us so far in this car. ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tour Combi.
  8. Hi Also placed this thread on the Roomster section , but its of interest to all of those with similar tight fitting problems. Which has the larger width tunnel size ?? Well its my understanding that the " Roomster" may actually live up to its name in one department anyway. To explain, we own a Octavia 4x4 Amb estate 07 LHD, and recently my wife had to take a colleague with her on a business trip. The male colleague however is a little on the large size, weighing 140klo and has difficulties driving many estates, so he was very pleased to be offered the chance to drive on some of the long motorway trip. Well the seat was fine, steering of course had its adjustments, but what spoiled the occasion was the lack of leg room. Legroom in the width that is , as you have to understand this fine fellow, has considerably thick legs to match his very large paunch etc. His legs, simply just banged together every km they were subjected to the Octavia's ample peddle tunnel. "Its the same old story he said !!!" only the Roomster has the correct width for my proportions." !! Looks like its a Roomster I must buy, now I have tried all the makes and models. So people !! what is the width of the tunnel in the Roomster, is it larger than the Octy estate ??? Our colleague thinks so !!! ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tour Combi

  10. It seems the US has got up to speed with the electric car . Interesting for our part that its named after a Croatian Nikola Tesla, a Serbian immigrant born in Croatia. 12. Hi With the 4x4 we are currently on 19,000+ km not had any problems so far, first service was under 15,000km. Fuel 5,90 lts diesel -100km that's 45.73 miles per gal I think, down to 80% motorway driving more recently, consumption hasn't really changed, accept the fuel is more expensive of course. Thread under this heading may help you. Octy Scout owners - any problems so far? 13. We didn't pay anything here in Croatia, that is for the first and then it will be for the second service also, it was part of the sales pitch when we bought the 4x4 new last year. 15. Hi We run a Octy 2 4x4 estate and also the company Octy 1 Tour estate, and its in the boot area head room where the difference is. This is due to the slope of the rear window, making the 4x4 appear smaller I find no other difference. ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tour Combi.
  16. A bit early to say , we have done 18,000km, in under 5months though. Had its first service at 15,000km, ( 4 months) expect to do 40,000km within 12months 80% motorway, rest on potholed country roads, and city streets. Not one problem so far fingers crossed. ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tor Combi.

  18. Hi !! seen this on SKY about fuel in Scotland Garages Told: Don't Pump Up The Prices Updated:15:43, Wednesday April 23, 2008 Filling stations have been urged not to cash in on fears of fuel shortages prompted by the threat of an oil workers' strike in Scotland. The plea comes after a garage in Kirkcaldy, Fife, charged £1.45 for diesel and £1.25 for unleaded petrol. It has since brought it prices down but is still asking £1.30 for a litre of diesel and £1.20 for petrol. A spokesman for the Rix garage said: "We were charging £1.45 and £1.25 on Monday night because of a misunderstanding with the computer. "It was only for 20 minutes until the computer was reset." The Scottish Motor Trade Association said any filling station that suddenly upped its prices by four or five pence was almost certainly profiteering. He said this was more likely to happen at privately-owned filling stations which can charge whatever they want. He said: "I would ask them not to do that and I would ask them to recamp. Motoring experts have also issued a plea to motorists not to panic buy. Shell is axeing jobs A spokesman for price comparison website PetrolPrices.com told Sky News:"It will only create artificial shortages. "Our advice to motorists is stick to your normal filling cycle. There is plenty of fuel to go round." Meanwhile, talks to avert a 48-hour strike at the Grangemouth oil refinery are continuing at the conciliation service Acas. Up to 1,200 workers are threatening to walk out on Sunday and Monday in a row over pensions. :: Oil giant Shell has announced it is to axe 180 jobs in its North Sea operations. 19. Hi Derv was cheaper here in Croatia until recently, now Eurodiesel is more expensive than all products. Not in your league though, but pro rata to salary, its expensive at 80p+ lt, that has jumped from around 70p+ 3 months ago. ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tor Combi.
  20. I live here and stupid drivers like this are common. Roads are mostly empty in the winter spring months but not in the summer. Summer its slower than inner London !!! Police car looked to be a Octy, and if Police don't give the ticket and get reported, they lose their jobs here, unlike police in the UK. Here the complaints believe the driver, if there is a complaint, they trap the police using marked notes.
  21. Hi Astonbuilder, we have a Skoda boot mat, it has dimples all over it and has good grip. We were away yesterday all day with the dog, and wind was a new issue. Using same method command etc all goes well, but windy conditions blows the towel or any other cover for six. However dog is getting well used to waiting before coming out and again on returning. We even cover the Skoda tray/ matt with a cloth to absorb the odd water drops that get splashed around when dog is confined while shopping etc. This cloth too was sent blowing in the wind yesterday, so it was trifle problematic. The fixed plastic ideas for the bumper at least would stop that problem, but of course you still require cloth for the rubber surround and the inner step of the hatch. Can't train the weather !!! ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tor Combi.
  22. I have to agree with cheezemonkhai. Our Nissan Sunny has lam windows, but has a strip around all areas, nearly 13yrs old 144000miles, 200,000+km, bad roads, hot sun, cold winters, and no problems at all. So are all OCTY 2 going to get it, or not ?? Do some escape ?? ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tor Combi.
  23. Think some of us are still asking the same question, and getting no real answer maybe that is now the bigger issue. Is this a Octy / Skoda thing or do other manufacturer have same problem. One Briskodian has said its on OCTY 2s only !!! ------------------------------------ Octy 2, 1.9 TDI PD Ambiente 4x4 Combi and Nissan Sunny 2.0 DLX, Company Octy 1.9 TDI Tor Combi.
  24. Ok so here are some shots taken today, Command method using a towel as a defense against scratches , all comments welcome, thank you. Just opened hatch, given command sit or down , sometimes he lays down if we sound too stern. Other occasions, he is just raring to go as hatch goes up. At command OK note use of towel. Now back again after short walk of course. Up up and in we go. Off for another ride are we. Never a dull day says he. Thats it folks, towel and command method, jury out on the use of plastic at this time.
  25. Hi Surfdude Just came back from a short run for the dog and a huge meal for us, !!! Anyway may have some pics later, Medo ( dog) stays / sits within the boot area 99 % of the time as commanded ( without titbits) this we have never tried before believe it or not. However he will start to move forward to the exit as the hatch opens, that is both our blind spots, unless constantly given the command stay. We would estimate that 90% of the time he will either sit or lay back from the hatch/ door, allowing for the towel to be put in place. He will of course do this in reverse before entering, but we also have to now remember this new regime, of .... Command Stay, Open Hatch Reinforcing Command as we do so, and grabbing for towel, and placing it over areas concerned. Then the command OUT, ( we use IN also ) seems to work for him better than us, not surprising !!!. Towel maybe too thin even in 3 folds, might still use a permanent fixture/ plastic of the bumper, jury still out on that.
