  1. I got two keys to work today! Vag Tacho is funny tho, to program one or two keys (don't know how to do any more) I needed to erase all old keys, tell it that I only need to program one, say ok, leave it for about 20secs, switch off the ignition, take the newly coded key out, then put a new one in and switch on the ignition again. The two keys seem to work ok now. Before hand, both deffo weren't working.
  2. yeah, I got that too (something like 1be0 came up), so I guessed it must have been in hex format, I checked by converting it into decimal and seeing that it was within 0-9999. The manual doesn't seem to mention it, and maybe I'm both wrong and lucky, but if I'm not I reckon it must catch some people out if the hex number shown doesn't contain any letters and they take that to be decimal.
  3. Hi, I only got one key (and no SKC) with my 01 Fabia too, so I ordered two keys from Hickley Valtone (part no:HVKHU66T6) and got a copy of Vag tacho 1.7. I got the keys cut for a fiver then plugged the computer into the car. I managed to get the SKC code (although Vag Tacho 1.7 seems to give it in hexadecimal format), but couldn't get Vag Tacho to program the new Hickley Valtone key. I could get Vag Tacho to tell the car not to start with my original key  but I managed to get the original key to work again, which makes me think that the transponder in the Hickley Valtone key does not work right. Anyone got one of these keys to work? I can't use VAG COM with the Tacho cable I have because the instructions warned me that the cable risks being damaged if I use it with any other software. Anyway, even if I don't manage to re-program the new key, I've learned the SKC code (I reckon it's right because I managed to re-program the original key with it), and I've got a spare key for emergencies and one for active pursuits, so I don't think I'm out, and I reckon I'm lucky that I seem to have got away with that and still have a working car. I did feel sick when my car didn't start with the original tho!!
  4. Sounds like a similar problem as mine, I've a creaking noise from the front nearside. I'm not an expert, but I reckon I reckon it's my wishbone bushes. I can't see any damage on them, but I've noticed that the middle isn't in the middle. Try spraying some WD40 or something on the bushes and see if the squeaking goes. It stops mine from making noises, so I'm getting them replaced with some cupra ones.
  5. I squeezed the little collar between the winder handle and the card, and then pulled in the opposite direction from the way the winder was pointing. It shouldn;t need to be forced.
  6. erm, should've already said that I've already got (well, ordered) the cupra bushes.
  7. Hi, Great guide! Thanks! I'm getting a mechanic to fit a cupra bushes. Is there anything more parts I need to get to fit it (new bolts, ballnut etc). Any part numbers too? Cheers, Paul
  8. If it is a bust injector it may be that you can smell diesel when the engine is running, an injector/seal went in my old car, it reeked of diesel and was hard to start from cold, like the glowplugs had failed. Do you think it's the clutch going?
  9. Doh!, found it. I had to yank it straight up! I was trying to pull the other way. It felt like I was on the krypton factor for a bit there tho.
  10. Hi, thought I'd revive this thread. Has anyone ever removed the air filter box from an SDI before? I've got most of the bits and pieces out but there seems to be a final attachment at the back of the lower half of the filter case that keeps it in there. Anyone know what I'm on about? Do I just yank this out? It's too awkward even to take a picture of. I'm only doing it cos I had some free silicone grease and time and I was gonna try sort out this clunking by greasing up the gearbox mount. I'm amazed at how complicated they made it to remove the battery box tho!
  11. I just got an 01 SDI estate and I find it really sluggish going up hill too. I have to keep the revs pretty high otherwise I lose speed. I don't get the revving when I turn it on, but some kinda whoosing (kinda like a hairdrier) noise for about a second. Previous to this I had a 95 Seat Ibiza which i reckon had an earlier VW SDI engine but which definitely wasn't sluggish but might've been geared a bit differently. And I put the whoosing noise of this engine down to all the electronics my Ibiza didn't have.
  12. To take the window winder off squeeze and then pull the wee ring separating the winder handle from the door card. It'll all come off in one piece.
  13. I started to re-seal mine myself today, but I never taped up the window first and there seemed to be some kind of sponge at the panel seam that was still soaking wet. I'm just after taping up the windows, I'm gonna let it sit and hopefully the sponge at the seam will dry out after a few days. I got a trim removal tool for 10!! from Halfords (think you can get ones just as good for a couple of quid of ebay) and some roof/gutter sealant and a "gun" for it for 6.50 from B&Q. I couldn't find any in tubs. And in my experience, if you're taking off the trim panel, it's probably best to slightly pry the plastic clips all off a little bit before the final wedge. Anyone know where you can get replacement clips from? Some of mine broke!
  14. I had to replace both dipped headlight bulbs at the weekend too, tho I didn't take the battery out. I've wee hands and a '01 SDI.
  15. Thanks rum4mo, Sorry about starting a new thread. I wasn't sure if it was the arb or the lower suspension arm because it seemed to go away when it got wet. The car made it anyway! Cheers, Paul
  16. Hi, I'm getting a clunking noise over bumps and on dry days I get a squeaking noise when if I take my foot on or off the throttle any other way than very gently. Am I right in thinking that it's the bush in the suspension arm is starting to go? And could I get away with taking it on a 50mile round trip at the weekend? It's a June'01 SDI "Classic" Estate. Cheers guys, Paul
