  1. Hi just joined and just bought a 51 Octavia and the noticed a wiper fault. Have searched read loads of issues about water and relays but wonder if it is the switch/stalk in mine. all functions work normally although when I put it on to fastest setting the wipers freeze and I have to put back to off position to get them working again. Having never had a Skoda or a recent VAG car i'm not really sure where to start. Should cleaning the relay be 1st port of call?

Thanks for any reply (1st post , Be kind:))

P.s. one of the air vents vanes are not moving with the wheel. Easy fix? can I just pull out the vents to see what is happening behind or is there hidden screws etc.?

Sounds like your wiper linkage is about to cease up. There have been a few posts about how to fix recently. Welcome to another 4x4 owner BTW

  2. You will be saying you want a discount for putting summer tyres on in summer next.

That's a good idea - double discount!

This post was a little tongue in cheek but trying to raise a valid point.

By trying to apply the logic insurers use to arrive at a premium, if I make my car safer in winter and less valuable, then by their own rules, the premium should be less.

  3. More of an issue with std l@k Xenons. New beam motor is £35 for std halogen lamp. Would get them checked professionally as they are not cheap units to replace. The spindle worm roller in the motor on one of my std lamps was badly worn and would not move properly in both directions. Sounds like they failed down as a fault has been detected.

  4. I have just put my winter wheels / Conti Winter Contacts on again after 9 months in the shed. Then it got me thinking that insurance companies should actually be giving a discount if you declare you have switched to winter tyres. I am aware, from other threads, that some companies are still trying to charge more.

    Think about it.

1/ Your reducing your risk of an accident by being able to stop quicker or take evasive action, with the additional grip.

2/ Chances are, your winter wheels are smaller and less attractive than what you normally drive around on. So it is less attractive to thieves.

Makes perfect sense to me... :wonder:

  5. In the Czech Republic and many other countries in Europe it is law to have winter tyres fitted from November to spring. You'd be a complete idiot not too, regardless of law. Driving around at -20 on snow/ice is no problem.

The minimum legal winter tyre depth in CZ is 4mm. However there is no such law in the UK so 1.6mm is the only legal requirement. Either way, an almost illegal (in CZ) set of winter tyres are going to be better than a brand new set of Summers below 0 degrees. The compound starts to come into it's own below 7 degress, but quickly become too soft over 15 degrees.

Hence almost illegal winter tyres from Germany being imported to the UK, where TBH, knowledge of winter tyres is very limited. Many will be duped into buying the worn winter tyres because on the face of it, they look a good buy due to UK minimum tyre depth laws.

My in-laws keep the winters in the barn during summer and typically get 3 winters use before needing to replaced them.

This youtube video gives a good explanation, by Continental incidently.

  6. Sounds like you need to get the throttle body recalibrated. This should really be done when cleaning the throttle body, if you have disconnected it to do the clean up.

Also try disconnecting the MAF, then car should run on defaults, the ESP light will stay on but it should run better.

Regarding the 17704 code , do you have a green coolant sensor? They was a factory recall back in the day IIRC.

  7. Ok, had this for a week or so now, so time for a mini review, ignoring the gamey bit.

    Official Specs HERE

    General look and feel:

Compares well to colleagues HTC Desire's and Galaxy S phones. A bit on the heavy side (170g), due to the gamepad. Speed is well upto par. Played Tron 2010 no problems with Mobo Player. Flash works without slowdown's. Very good quality 5MP camera, but no zoom of any sort. Works well in bad light too, with bright LED flash.

Build quality is very good, back feels a little plasticky if I must complain. Got 3x screen protectors off Ebay for 99p ...

Comes with Micro USB Charger, 8GB Class 6 MicroSD card and a set of headphones. No video/HDMI out.

    Battery Life:

Getting 2 days. I do run Advanced Task Killer and turn off the Data connection when not using it. The phone is not possible to root with Gingerbreak so unless I do the official bootloader hack (which invalidates the warranty), then I can't run Adblock and use Titanium Backup to remove bloatware. Not the phones fault, apparently there are no exploits for 2.3.3 (yet?).

    Reliability.

Not crashed once despite me hammering it. Decided on Skyfire as the best browser for speed and size. Dolphin HD runs great but not keen on the anonymous stats gathering. Using K9 for mail as before.

    Games.

Ok , have to mention this. It's probably so cheap because it hasn't taken off as a gamepad phone but you get 11 free : Bruce Lee, EA NFS Shift and Hot Pursuit, Fifa 2010, Dead Space, Battle Commander 2, The Sims 3, Tetris, Star Battlalion, Crash Bandicoot PS1 and Gameloft Asphalt 6. Some you have to download, via Wifi.

    Summary

£200 sim free, found it cheaper (actually got it for £190 as get cashback through work) but locked to network and sold out.

I would say you'd have a hard job to find a faster, better phone for less right now. CPW still selling it at £499 which it is certainly not worth in light of the competition.

The gamey bit is a bonus if you need to past some time when your stuck at trains stations etc.

  9. This might sound daft, but have you had your brake light switch checked, or is there a code for it...??

It is dual circuit (lights/ECU) and will kill the revs sporadically if playing up...

Skoda Dealer will check coilpacks FOC and replace if genuine faulty variety fitted. Had mine confirmed ok on recent oil change. I had already checked them as was having similiar problems to you which ... turned out to be a faulty brake light switch....

  10. I think the Play is pretty similar innards to the Arc/Ray but with the addition of the slide out PS keypad thingy...is that right?

I think so. Having had the thing running for a day now, I am really impressed with it. In terms of battery life, it was on since I got it yesterday morning on about 70% charge, I downloaded about 2gb over my home LAN wifi (all the free games, files on my media server etc) and played games for about an hour and by 11pm it started complaining the battery was at 15%.

Unfortunately no way to root it without doing a boot loader flash as it runs Android 2.3.3 but found on my previous 2.1 based phone that Advanced Task Killer, set to Autokill every hour, yielded a 30% improvement in battery life.

Great phone. I think the Ray is slightly more up spec and thinner but was another £80, sim free.

  11. I'am looking for the carbon dash surround that goes around the rear windscreen heater ect. and the radio, i got one from a vrs but it doesn't fit due to my heater controls being knobs :p can anyone point me in the right direction

Think Milotec do one for A/C not climate control - try superskoda.com. Someone else on here recently seemed to have a good result with film too.

  12. Kwik fit sent me some £20 off vouchers for winter tyres and a reminder to get them refitted, as bought mine about this time last year. As have them on spare wheels, I went in to enquire about getting the nitrogen fill topped up and they confirmed 25% off. Paid £394 for 205/55/16 Conti TS830 last year and found them excellent on the 4x4.

Didn't have a good experience with Mytires delivery company, DPD, last year, hence the local Kwik Fit purchase.

  13. Remember someone following me home on a busy country lane one night with badly fitted aftermarket HID's. No possibility of overtaking to get away from the annoying glare which was giving me a headache, even with a dipped mirror. After 5 miles, I felt like stopping the guy and sticking his head into one of them, so he could see better, of course.

  14. Glance read this today. Agree, not particularly well researched although the BX 16Valve is a bit of a rare beast as I believe the engine wasn't designed to run on unleaded. My dad had the 8 valve BX Gti back when I was just learning ... I got the keys to the Citroen Visa 1100 RE only though ... :'(

Although not all hatches, the Cavalier Gsi / Peugoet 405 Mi16 / Sierra 4x4 and Audi Coupe 20v would have been a better match for this car, possibly in a different article...

  15. At the risk of sounding a bit like a Wings employee (which I am not), had a 10k oil change service done there last week for less than the cost at a local independent and very happy with the service. Warranry coil packs checked (mine are R's so no issue). Dropped off and picked up from work on time in a Fabia Vrs (nice) and they gave mine a good clean up too. They do seem to change front desk staff every time I go in there, but the MasterTech I normally speak to (Paul) is always very helpful.
