  1. DSG was not smooth at slow speeds forward and reverse, basically it juddered too much for my liking when reversing out of drive. Dealer did a software upgrade and the problem has diminished but not disappeared. There is also whining noise at gear changes at certain speeds when accelerating and decelerating eg slowing down upon entering major roundabout.
  2. I checked with SkodaUK about extended warrantyfor my 59 Octavia and was told that it's a dealer sale and is not the same as the Skoda 3 year warranty (the hint was that it's not as good). But the good news is that with new Skodas you can purchase at time of sale an extra 2 yrs Skoda warranty, ie not third party add-on, which means you can enjoy Skoda protection for 5yrs. This may be better than going third party route, as usual much depends on cost and degree of cover.
  3. Update: went into module 55 and then adaptation 10, I then increased the value of channel from 00 up thru 23. At channel 2 a ballon appeared advising that this is tourist mode and that value 0 is for RHD and value 1 is for LHD. Looked promising so I changed value to 1 and ran another scan. Result= Address 55: Xenon Range Labels: 5M0-907-357-V2.lbl Part No SW: 5M0 907 357 C HW: 5M0 907 357 C Component: AFS-Steuergeraet 0142 Revision: 00H04000 Serial number: Coding: 1507610 Shop #: WSC 23042 576 999999 VCID: 3461599257CB51B8F54 Subsystem 1 - Part No: 7L6 941 329 B Component: AFS-Lst.-Modul l 0004 Coding: 00000023 Subsystem 2 - Part No: 7L6 941 329 B Component: AFS-Lst.-Modul r 0004 Coding: 00000023 1 Fault Found: 02988 - Left-Hand/Right-Hand Traffic Switchover Active 000 - - Freeze Frame: Fault Status: 01100000 Fault Priority: 6 Fault Frequency: 1 Reset counter: 153 Mileage: 24757 km Time Indication: 0 Date: 2102.14.19 Time: 15:48:43 Freeze Frame: Voltage: 11.79 V Speed: 0.0 km/h ABS 1 I checked RossTech site for fault code 02988 and heh presto it confirms that this fault indicates tourist mode activated. I didn't save the change, just in case. No fault light came on the instrument cluster, but may be this only happens if the change is saved. The dealer's mechanic (see post above) told me that a fault light will appear to confirm Euro setting and not to worry as it will clear when he changes the lights back to UK setting.
  4. Thanks for directing me to the dtc screen. The more I delve into all this the more worried I get that I might blow the electronics!
  5. For my load lugger 4 new tyres (Michelin primacy 225/50R17W) required - dealer wants £249 each, local tyre shed £175. Only diff is the dealer's quote is for 98W and shed can only supply 94W.
  6. Done a bit of googling and as you suggested a lot of similar failures on VAGmobiles. Is this something I should raise with dealer/SkodaUK now or wait till next service/MOT in December. If I hadn't been playing with my vcds I'd be none the wiser. Perhaps ignorance is bliss. I've yet to learn how to clear failure codes. I shall consult Ross Tech web site.
  7. I'm pretty sure it is available because a while back in the dealer's customer car park a mechanic changed the xenon lights for euro travel. The young mechanic did it with a pc and a dongle (maybe vcds). I tried to see how he did it but he asked me to wait in customer waiting room. Did the same when I returned to UK.
  8. Although I've have a few faults when I did the auto scan I thought I would see how to invoke tourist mode (I don't have maxidot). A search on google gave the following: select control module 55 (xenon range) select 10 adaptation for normal xenons change channel 10 from 0 to 1 for adaptive xenons change channel 23 from 0 to 1 Seems straightforward, but on my 59 Octavia both channel 10 and 23 seem inactive. So the question is which channel relates to tourist mode?
  9. Thanks, I've got a few quotes from the likes of WD and WWise. I shall have to read the small print re exclusions. I agree I doubt Skoda will be interested 4 months after expiry of 3 year warranty (which someone told me is 2yr by manufacture + 1yr by dealer). And one provider is interested only if car is less than 3 months after MOT passed.
  10. When my Octavia's Skoda warranty expired at the end of last year I wasn't offered an extended warranty by Skoda/dealer and I didn't have the foresight to enquire. My wife is troubled by this and has asked me to arrange something to cover the next 2 or 3 years. I tried WarrantyWise but their website doesn't recognize my reg number. Warranty Direct insist on quoting for manual not semi auto (dsg). Can anyone recommend a provider? I have the Skoda extended breakdown run by the RAC, anyone tried them for extended warranty. I have also asked Skoda if it's too late for me to have a Skoda warranty extension (no reply so far)
  11. Car is 4 months out of warranty. At the December 2012 service I asked that the car be put on fixed service instead of variable because I do only 6,000 miles pa. I also got them to check behaviour of dsg because of kangaroo syndrome between 1st and 2nd. They did a software update on the dsg. Otherwise nothing found and MOT passed. Thanks for links I'll do a bit of googling. I have a feeling I'm going to be one of the unlucky Skoda owners.

  13. OK I've downloaded software (11.11.5) and got the dongle to communicate with usb on my laptop. I've located canbus and I'm ready to go. Question - for the first time scan should I have the engine turned on or just the instrument lights on. I don't want to blow anything. The car is 1.8 tsi dsg. Thanks
  14. Thanks for replies. Because of all the moggies I can't be too liberal with the use poison nor set mouse traps. I'll have to restrict the poison to the area of the hose pipe that rodent seems to like, and hope the cats don't get too curious!
  15. Parked next to my shiny 1.8 tsi Octavia is my dirty diesel loadlugger (V70 year 08). It seems a rodent has taken a liking to the protective covering around the vacuum hose that sits between engine and bulkhead and I had to have it replaced twice so far this year. No rodent problems with the Octavia, so far. Any advice on how to keey rodents away. Although we don't have cats there are about half a dozen neiboughhood moggies that regulararly patrol the front garden and drive day and night.
  16. I decided on vcds because its cheaper and more versatile, and you keep it when you junk the Skoda for another Skoda or VAG motor. Maxidot retrofit is very expensive if you go thru dealer and some won't even consider it.
  17. Sound advice, Tom Tallon. How about getting warranty quote from the likes of Direct Warranty for 1.8tsi manual and 1.8tsi 7speed dsg and see what the difference is.
  18. Did dealer provide maxidot or did you source from the likes of Skodateile? I'm now off to watch rugby on TV.
  19. Yes the standard response is no, no , no. Because dealers are told (if they care to ask) that SkodaUK will not help out if anything subsequently goes wrong. Basically it's wait until out of warranty then do what you like.
  20. Good grief. Chain tensioner on its third revision. What's wrong with german engineers these days. Come back Werner von Braun!
  21. Thought I'd better find out how my cottage in the Normandy countryside is doing. Phoned the farmer next door - yes lots of snow, can't get his tractor out onto the lane, and he thinks drifting snow is up to roof of my place!
  22. Yes, my feelings until today, life is too short and I am beaten! Yesterday had the rear seat bolsters off to see if I could get rear seats to drop flat. After putting bolsters back and checking for tight fit I took car for drive and hells bells a new set of rattles. SWMBO reckons I should leave well enough alone and get on with life ie all those odd jobs about the place.
  23. Ah right, I'll give this a try later today.
  24. I've had a similar rattle(s) for 3 years; since it was 2 months old in fact. Dealer couldn't find, and the rattle was and is intermittent. Never occurs on very cold days or very bad roads. I'm used to it now and my mates have stopped making old Skoda jokes after all we are talking German engineering design here. Good luck in your quest for rattle free motoring
