  1. I've just realised that I haven't been much help with guidance. Bedding the brakes in requires a firm braking but not too hard and certainly not a lot of gentle braking, otherwise they could glaze and not be at their best. I suppose the same goes for tyres. As for the engine and transmission I have never ragged a new engine and the handbook probably gives a guide over the first 1000 Km, or 600 miles.
  2. The handbook gives a good guide to running in. Certainly you need to bed in the brakes for the first 100 or so miles, and the tyres need a few hundred easy miles to bed them in to best efficiency.
  3. Try a DSG in all driving styles, including tight parking moves before you buy. I've had two 6 speed and one 7 speed and am now on my third 6 speed. The only thing I mark any of the DSG boxes down for are for maneuvering into a tight parking spot or narrow garage, particularly if there is a slight incline involved. There can be a slight hesitation when taking off from standstill, but anticipation can negate that, (I find the 6 speed worse for this than the 7 speed). Another point is not leaving it in gear when stationary with a foot on the brake for a long period. Yes, I think the 6 speed is heavier on fuel, but I suspect not by much. It must sound as though I am trying to put you off but I'm not, I think it is a brilliant way of getting about, whether on a steady journey or enjoying an open road. If you choose a manual box I wouldn't blame you for that, they appear to be a good smooth change with a nicely weighted clutch. As I said initially, try a DSG box before you decide, it is a heck of a lot of extra money to have made a mistake, and no dealer will mind you trying both, after all it is your money you are spending and his potential profit.     Zorro. Yep I considered divorce. Unfortunately , she may be a badge snob but her salary kept me in the life I really wanted to live. Fastlouige. The Grand kids cut out some Skoda badges and stuck them on the front and rear badges on her Merc, and although she noticed that on the rear she drove for the rest of the day with the one on the front. Do you know what, nothing bad happened to her or the car. I take great pleasure in the fact that on coarse roads her car is no quieter than the Yeti, and on rough roads it rides very little better. I have also converted an old work mate to Skoda, and he now drives a 1.2 SE, so I don't feel so bad. The Leon is not a done deal if it doesn't turn up next week. I was rather hoping that Skoda would produce a fast Rapid, and if they had I would have been sorely tempted. Health issues have prompted a return to Auto and budget rules out another Yeti.

    It's going in part ex, and all I asked for was a price to change. I have looked at Octavia Elegance, Seat Leon FR, Golf 1.4 SE, and BMW 1 series nearly new, all automatic, and looking at it I reckon the part ex offered was for around £12750 to £13500. I'm guessing at the discounts offered on the purchased vehicle, apart from the Octavia when the dealer offered a straight 5%. The Octy turned out to be too big to comfortably get out of in the garage, the Golf turned out to be too good for me if you take the salesman's attitude into account, and the BMW dealership must have lost my details judging by their lack of contact. I ended up at the SEAT going by the budget and the fact that they really tried to get my business for a stock vehicle to my spec. I am slightly regretting it at the moment as said vehicle now seems to be lost somewhere between Barcelona and the UK. I'll give it another 7 days and then try and get out of the deal. I rarely buy the same car twice, but I was really hoping that the FL Yeti would include a 1.4 auto, but as it appears unlikely I have gone the usual route of just throwing money away. Still it is only the kids inheritance.

    After 21 months of Yeti ownership I am now having to move on. Having spent 2 years with a 1.8 Octavia and then moving on to a 1.4 Yeti I certainly noticed the performance difference. The one thing that did not change was the good service from the dealer, and no need to return between service visits. I was never bothered by the ride, it has never developed any rattles, (although over the last few months there has been a just discernible buzz from behind the instrument panel on coarse surfaces), and if revved past 4000 rpm it went well enough to overtake safely on single carriageway roads. My badge-snob wife, (a C class owner), disliked both Skodas, especially the Yeti, but didn't complain when I had to move 11 internal doors to the tip, and overall I have enjoyed my time with the car. The car is not perfect in my eyes, but as it was bought from stock I had as close to my spec and budget as I could find. Road noise can be irritating on really coarse surfaces, the rear view mirror is a little too low, (manual adjustment), the 17 inch tyres will be expensive to replace and ..... well, that's it. Almost best of all was finding this site, and although playing no part in the discussions I have tuned in daily to read comments and arguments. My one concern at the moment is the disappearance of Bobdog, a man of discernment, having owned at one time a Yeti and an MG B V8. I have missed his risque, (even risky), comments and I hope this is not a permanent situation as I intend continuing to watch the posts. Good luck and happy motoring to all. John
  7. I lusted after this car when I was a teenager, (and the car was new), but I knew I would never afford to run one 'cos the 50 gallon tank would have cost me £12- 10s to fill.
  8. My SE model didn't display oil temp when I picked it up, although the Octavia I traded it in for did. Both were set for time and distance service schedule. After a couple of trips to the dealer they reset the service to variable and oil temp was activated. BUT. Somewhere in the last month there has been a thread started which shows that oil temp can be activated with either service using either VCDS or the dealers own set-up. It just needs know how. John
  9. I came from an Octavia 1.8 DSG to a 1.4 SE+ Yeti. The Octy was about 2mpg better than the Yeti is; so much quicker in everyday driving; had a shed load more boot room; and was probably more suitable for my needs. But after a month with a Yeti I don't particularly feel short-changed, and it is growing on me. If value for money is your main criteria, 20% off an Octavia makes more sense. As for the seat trim, I don't mind it, although I would prefer the black door trim to the grey that mine has.
  10. Picked up my new Yeti 1.4 end of December, only to find that the oil temp display was not reading on the way home. It was booked in for the next week for a new sensor to be fitted and I had the loan of their Yeti demo. The sensor didn't change things and they ordered a new display pack. This was fitted today. In the meantime I noted that there has already been a thread on this subject, with a split as to whether it worked on both service schedules or just the variable. I was called this afternoon to say that the new pack had not cured the problem, but they had found that it did work with the variable service, but not with the t&d setting which mine was set to. They also said that it would not work with the t&d schedule as the sensor which monitors oil condition also measures the temp, and without the variable setting the temp would not show. It would appear that having had sensor and display changed the above must be true, at least for my car, which was manufactured Oct 2011. I have had it set to variable service but will change oil annually.
  11. Is 70 miles far enough? That was how far it took me to return the 16 miles home. My Octy had maxidot and from the word go oil temp was the setting I used from cold. It is surprising how much further you can drive after the water temp has stabilised in winter before the oil temp hits 90+.
  12. I replaced my Octavia Elegance for a new 1.4 Yeti and on the journey home noted that the oil temp would only show the 3 bars. Oil temp is my default setting so it was booked in for a check. They replaced a sensor which made no difference and are fitting a "dash insert" at the end of the month. I too looked the available settings on the maxidot, but I couldn't find anything to do with oil temp. Fingers crossed the next visit will cure the problem.
  13. You make me feel guilty about jumping the queue. Well, maybe a little. Ahh what the heck. I just took what was available on the day. Being impatient and wanting to hopefully save money by not waiting for an exact spec, I was lucky enough to be in the right place, with a sales guy who was happy to put himself out to help. Having lumbar support was my main criteria for choice.

  17. Having started the topic "Should I....", I went to the local dealers showroom yesterday and walked out a couple of hours later having put down a deposit on a stock SE +. It was down to you guys that I took the plunge, I just hope that it lives up to my expectations in everyday life.
  18. Took the car in to ask for an apparent light clutch judder, (a topic raised previously), to be looked at. The only time they had before Christmas to look at it was impossible for me to make. So I decided to leave it until the annual service in January. Had a wander round the showroom and walked out two and a half hours later having placed a deposit on a stock Yeti. A fool and his money....etc!
  19. Yes she does drive, (after a fashion. Learned on the same Bren Gun Carrier her father used) She is an ex University Lecturer. She is NEVER wrong. She is a badge snob. (I won't mention what she drives).
  20. Yeah. I guess I knew it would be a BIG mistake putting it on this site. Does this mean my subconcious has already made the decision? The trouble is that I want to change now, and there is virtually nothing available new. I contacted Carfile who I have had good service from in the past, and they can change for roughly the same price as my local dealer can do an Octavia with toys for. I would rather go with the local people but they can't come anywhere near with their Yeti quote. By the way, the little woman says there is no way she will be seen in a truck. So maybe I will be having some lonely journeys!
  21. I feel I have backed myself into a corner. I want to change my Octavia for another, but then made the horrendous mistake of trying a Yeti. Unfortunately it does fit the garage, and it seemed little different to drive than my current 1.8 DSG Octavia, (other than being slower). Do I go the sensible route and have something with a large boot and save money; or do I buy something different and spend more of the kids inheritance? It would mean dropping to a 1.4, but I am not sure that would bother me. I should say that I'm retired and I am reckon that friends will look and say something along the lines of "look at that sad old git trying to look younger than he is". Looking on the Skoda CZ site it is apparent that they have a wider choice of colours, including contrasting roof option. I guess that would increase delivery times by another few weeks.
