Bodywork looks good. Be interesting to see how long it lasts etc since it was a fair bit to get done I seem to remember you saying.

    Yeah me too.

Tom said that he's had cars come back in for other work where the owner had this done and hadn't washed the car for 9 months. Not only did it not look too dirty, what dirt there was came off very easily. We'll see.

On the up side, I don;t have to wax it or polish it.

  2. Got her back from Extreme Gleam yesterday after a week. Tom couldn't believe how bad the paintwork was after just 5000 miles. Looked like the dealer had been skating on it and he thinks it had even been through an automated wash. Anyway, job done, kidney sold. Should now stay like this for a long time.

He also does spraying so come hibernation time my S2000 will go in as that needs at least 5 panels fixed lol.

I’ve tried everything from 95 to Shell Racing 100 (Germany); couldn’t tell a difference between any of them. So 95 it’s been for the best part of past year.

To be fair though, I didn’t do any comparison of fuel consumption – too tedious to be scientific about that.

PS: Not saying you're sad, DBT85...:D

Haha its ok. A man can do great things with a can of WD40, a handfull of cable ties, some gaffa tape and his spreadsheets.

I have a job with a loooot of spare time on my hands, and I do more mileage than most so I wanted to have a look see. With the difference being so small I'll just keep putting Momentum in.

I also keep a log of all the fuel I put in and mileage etc. Was more to see how this Steinbauer box will compare when it gets refitted at the end of the month.

Yuk ! Had to put 95 in yesterday .... Wonder if I will notice ...

I think the worst I had to do was some 97. It's had one tank of Shell 99 and about 5 of Momentum. Momentum is so cheap by comparison lol. My record fill was 66.13 litres :D

FWIW for anyone that's not done any numbers. If you only get 28MPG on both regular (@ £1.18l) and on Momentum (@£1.23l). I don't usually see a 5p difference in the fuel at Tesco either to be fair.

10,000 miles of Regular costs £1,913.29.

10,000 miles of Momentum costs £1,994.36

    That's £81 a year

If Momentum only gets you 1mpg more (29MPG), it's cost you £12. If it gets you 2MPG more (30MPG) its saved you £51.89.

15,000 miles of Regular costs £2,869.93

15,000 miles of Momentum costs £2,991.54

    That's £121.61 per year.

If Momentum only gets 1mpg more (29MPG) its now cost you £18.45 a year. If it gets 2 more (30MPG) its saved you £77.83.

Yes I'm sad and have lots of spare time at work :D

I still find those figures rather surprising, never mind the gentle driving. The best I've ever seen is 35, and 'normal best' is at or near 32, while high 20s is more typical. I do high mileage.

Do remember that I was on the motorway inside 2 mile from work, then its about 80 miles of motorway going the opposite way to all the traffic, then 35 miles of a/b roads at 50 or 60. The last traffic light I saw was as I came off the m40, the one before that, just before I got on to the M4.

My average over a tank after 2000 miles is about 32mpg and that's mostly motorway.

  5. Little experiment for my own interest this morning.

Drove from Heathrow to my house in Worcester at the end of my shift. 113 miles. Put on the cruise at 64 mph on the M4/25/40.

Managed 39mpg. 8 minutes longer drive time from my usual where I put  it at 75 and get between 32mpg and 34mpg.

So it can do it if you really need to.

Took the opportunity to check out the 4x4 in the heavy snow we had round here in the last few days. Very impressive. Found grip, kept on the straight and narrow. I was the only one who made it in to work on Friday (not sure that's a great advantage).

Yeah mine was ok too, tho I'm a heathen in these parts and don't buy winter tyres.

I actually meant more for the wife who'll need to follow me to the detailer in her Beetle!

    Hi All

im continuing my search for a 280 L&K estate. Nothing on Autotrader quite right or right price. Phoned a garage earlier who have a 2016 280 L&K coming in around 8 weeks (customer part exchange - said customer is buying the same again plus towbar), when they inspected it had done 14k miles. It’s in grey and has a sunroof. They are asking £24k - what do you guys think on price? Is there anything different about a 2016 vehicle? Really value your thoughts.

    cheers

    nick

For what its worth Nick, my 4 month old 280 L&K Estate with just 3k on it was £33500 when I bought it at the end of January. That was a very high spec though with the only thing not on it being the paddles and a towbar really. Had the sunroof, heated wheel, and all the other addons.

So yours would be £10k less for a car 18 months older and with 10k more miles.

Don't forget, they are probably only giving that buy 18 or 19k if that for his car.

  8. Provided I can get my car in (snow may stop me), it's getting its full new car detail and ceramic coat on Monday. Getting all the wheels done too while its there. Going to run me £950 but considering the 18-20k miles I do a year it seems to make sense to protect it a bit. The detailer will have a good job ahead of him as with all this snow and slush the car is in a right state after doing 450 miles in it.

Do any of you have the side sensors as well? Just a personal view but I've found they actually detract from the front and back sensors (which I love) as they are just too sensitive and tend to shout all over the front and back ones when getting into a narrower space or going around a tighter corner (eg multi-storey car park).

Not had the problem myself really. They are a bit twitchy if you're going through a width restriction sometimes, but I'm only usually going through them at such a low speed for the sensors to activate if some berk is in front of me trying to get their OG Mini through a 6'6" at 3mph.

Side sensors are nice as they lead to self parking lol. Used it quite a few times outside my mum and dads place as it's now the only place I go where I have to parallel park and at times there is very limited space. The car can much more easily determine a large enough gap than I can and it nails it every time. Also, it freaks people out.

    Android Auto

Not sure about the rest of you, but I use Waze and Spotify all the time in the car and as I mentioned I'm in the car a lot. So I've been using Android Auto. I have the nice 9.2" screen which is very sharp for the crap (by comparison) inbuilt sat nav, but it made Waze or Google Maps look a bit naff as it was a much lower resolution.

Well I just found out that you can enable 720 or even 1080 output from your phone for android auto in the developer settings. Much better. Less soft looking and no jaggies.

    Welcome to the forum :hi:

It's Haldex 5th gen so not actually permanent AWD:

I was under the impression that at all times on the 4x4 5% was going to the rear and more would go if front slip was detected.

My 115 miles journey this evening from Worcester to Heathrow was tense, but without excitement. I think at one point I detected maybe half a second of the car not quite moving in the direction it was pointed under braking and then it settled down again. I'm one of the heathens here that just runs on summers all year though.

  10. I don't NEED parking sensors, but they are already there and can tell quite definitively, without any crunching, where I am.

I LIKE having them, they benefit me and have the only downside as being that some people on the internet really don't like them for reasons as yet unknown.

Maybe it's just the right cat food doing high mileage, it makes the driving more pleasurable and you will get to enjoy all that stealthy performance on more occassions than most.

True. It munches miles beautifully and then if I need or want the poke, it's got it.

  12. So, 1 month and 2000 miles(!) down and the Estate L&K 280 is chunting along nicely.

As I do more mileage than most with this car I've been keeping a log to see whats what on the economy side and I've been a little surprised on a few occasions. One particular 115 mile mostly 60-70mph journey had me sitting pretty at 36.5mpg by the time I turned off.

Also, I've read people saying that their trip is rarely accurate, however mine seems to be matching my readings quite closely. 31.5/31.43, 30.4/30.36, 31.7/31.41 and todays result, 33.20/33.20.

I've been on Momentum 99 by the way. Even got the platinum Tesco card as I might as well get the points while I'm at it.

Wrong car to buy for doing high mileage really of course, but I knew that before I bought it :D

  13. A few days of driving around London and I'm happy to report I've sussed my Stop/Start with no real issues.

With AutoHold on the car just sits there waiting for me to look at the throttle, so in regular traffic I just breathe on it when the cars in front start to move and by the time the dullard in front of me has actually moved I'm good to go.

In slow moving stuff at roundabouts and junctions where I don't want it to do anything, a light pressure on the wheel seems to stop it suffering its narcolepsy.

I did notice pulling out of junctions has to be done with care as there seems to be a short delay between the power being delivered, which I believe someone has already mentioned.

A DSG takes a little time to get used to, not long though. It won't be long before being caught out by the small delay won't happen any more.

All worth it when you do a launch and just see it shifting seamlessly and speed climbing like the clappers. Honestly, cars this big and comfortable shouldn't move that fast lol.

Had mine just over a week now and it certainly wafts along nicely and when you want poke it comes along and delivers it on a little silver platter.

You can either check with the back door handles, or you also have about 2 seconds after locking to check with the front door handles. Or as you say, just accept that the lights and mirrors mean it’s locked!

Ha yeah I know now. But I'd literally left the dealer and gone to the the supermarket so knew nothing about it lol.

  16. Yeah, its on the bit where you would usually put a key to open the door.

Only had KESSY a few days and I love it already.

First trip to the supermarket when I picked the car up was funny though.

Got out, locked the car with the key, checked the door with my hand, it unlocked. Cue me doing this about 5 times before accepting that if the lights flashed and the mirrors folded, it must be locked

Yeah but that's kinda the point....  If you've got a gap of 25m on a 30mph that's really not enough space to get out, regardless of DGS / stop start / car make etc as that would be the highway code definition of safe distance...  I would argue that it wouldn't be safe to pull out anyway as you are likely to make the car you're out in front of have to brake...  The 2.0 TSI is quoted at a 0-30mph of 3.8s but you've only got a 2s gap to pull out into...

FWIW I'm not disagreeing that the delay for engine to fire up and car get going isn't great, but if auto hold is on then car doesn't know you want to go till the loud pedal gets pushed and it takes a moment for the engine to fire up... with a combustion engine I don't see any way around that?  I simply account for that when pulling off, or turn off start stop or auto hold to get quicker response.  I'd say the car (in my limited mileage so far) behaves consistently, so it's not like it's a surprise or anything when it does it.

+1 on the lane assist, really weird to have the car fight you but I love it on the commute in crawling traffic!

Oh absolutely 25m isn't a safe distance. What I'm saying is, it could be 75m and suddenly with a bit of a delay and tyre scrabble you pull out and the bloke up your chuff is a lot closer than they maybe needed to be were it not for that initial delay.

As I said, when I got my first DSG in my Octavia 6 years ago it took some getting used to quite simply because of that slight delay sometimes. Often back then I'd hear manual drivers claiming we were all going to die at roundabouts because of it. It just takes some getting used to and perhaps some adjustment. I don't see it really as any more adjustment than me jumping in my S2000 or my wifes 1.8T Beetle. Different cars drive differently. With DSG and Stop Start there will be a minor adjustment to be made. Thus far I've already started taking my foot off the break a few seconds before I feel I need to set off just to get it fired up again. I've only had to roll slowly up to one roundabout so far so I've not had the chance to work out how I'll deal with it, but deal with it I shall. The system will get a far more vigerous workout when I'm driving across London while down working I've no doubt.
