Converting 4WD 02M Gearbox to 2WD

Featured Replies

I've been told it's just a matter of removing the transfer box and bolting a sealing plate over the aperture to block the oilway.

Can anyone shed any light on what's involved?

Very true it can be done.

Better off finding a 2WD 02M box to start with though.

pull the fuse on the hadex if all you want is 2wd. You'll still be carrying a lot of weight with the different rear end.

and lower losses as the prop will always be turning.

Ok, maybe I should have explained the circumstances.

I no longer have the S3 (I joined this site in 2007 when I DID have the S3) as explained in my welcome post.

I currently have an LCR and have a Peloquin on the way and I am looking for a spare box to rebuild with the LSD.

4WD drive (TT/S3) boxes are more common second hand than petrol 02M's hence my question...

So, returning to my original question, how EXACTLY is it done?

I'm hoping it's just a case of unbolting the transfer box and sealing the aperture that is left. Someone suggested the diff might need changing but I don't think that would be needed as I've seen pics of a TT/S3 diff and they are identical to a 2WD 02M diff.

2WD TT diff?

Sorry, I don't see the point of your post.

If I could find a 2WD TT box (only on 180bhp versions) I wouldn't bother asking how I convert a 4WD version.

 at the tone of your posts!!! Stewart!!

You will be left with a hole to blank, what more info do you need?? You need to come up with a solution to blank the hole, welding a plate over it would be the best bet imho. :)

might not be that easy though tom, there might be something that needs supporting as the transfer box will no longer be there and this is the sort of thing the man is asking

2WD TT diff?

Pretty sure the 2WD TT uses a 02J anyhow not an 02M.

Could find a diesel 2WD 02M, they are a lot more common place then just swap the casing over.

quite randomly the 5 speed 4WD TT's had a 5 speed 02M type box rather than a 4WD 02J type box like the octavia.

I have a 6 speed petrol 02M on mine.......i think.
