Hi All,

It looks like my oil pressure sensor has one from reading past threads.

The oil light is flashing red but there is definitely enough oil in the car.

Does anyone know if I can still drive it for the next few days whilst I get this booked in?

Its flashing continually and making a beeping noise so is quite anoying :(

Any ideas?

At the risk that the oil pressure is low i'd say no.

NO NO NO.

Big damage can be done with low oil pressure.

The oil pressure switch is on the front of the engine block at the gearbox end, close to the oil filter. If you disconnect the plug and it is full of oil the sensor has gone and it should be OK to drive. If there is any doubt, don't run the engine. If the oil pressure is low the engine will be making expensive noises in no time.

Is the dipstick between the markers?

A friend of mine had a Pug 306 Diesel, the oil light came on and blew the turbo so loft is right saying that when the light comes on its usually not got too long left before something really serious happens :eek:

Could be a faulty sensor if there really is enough oil though.

Thanks very much for the reply - Is there any way of measuring the oil pressure at home to determine whether its ok to drive?

The mechanic cant look at it till Saturday and I dont really know how to look at the sensor to see if it has oil in it or not :(

Can anyone explain slowly how to do this please? I m quite frightened to drive the car and its been pretty good for the last 3 years

Dipstick is definitely between the markers and has not lost any oil - How is the oil actually circulated around the car?

Is it a pump?

The oil is circulated by the pistons moving I believe.

It is def the oil light?

Could be the sensor that's faulty.

It could be the sensor or it could be the oil pump in which case your not going to know until you inspect one or the other

I ve attached a screenshot of the engine bay :(

There is oil on one plug but not oil on the other and the plug nearest to the oil filter is completely dry whilst the plug further away is wet.

Does this mean its the sensor guys?

I m worried to death :( and the mechanic cant see it before Sat.

Any ideas?

The car has actually been very reliable and has done 40K miles with one previous owner - Its the only family car and I am now using it very very occasionally whilst it gets repaired but as I have a little one I do need it for short distances and had to drive it today

do not use your car , if the oil does not circulate ( via the oil pump , the pistons only splash it about ) the crankshaft / big ends / camshaft /main bearing/ turbo all will fail

even though there is oil in the sump , it doesn't mean it is pumping round !

1) get a new oil pressure switch -- about £10 , easy to fit , spin engine , if light goes off , then it was probably the cause )

2) if it stays as it is , you need to get it checked out

running a car where the oil doesn't circulate = destroyed engine

I ve tried to attach a picture of the engine bay above - Looking at it you should be able to see two sensor plugs - One on the right and one right near the oil filter.

The one near the oil filter is completely dry whereas the one on the right has got oil staining which would tie in with what others have said about the senor being the problem if it has oil around it.

Can anyone explain where the oil sensor is? Is it right near the oil filter or to the right as above?

Would something called VAG COM rule out the pump here?

Any ideas really appreciated

Well - I had to drive it today to work to take the little one to the doctors - The light has stopped

Is this good news or should it still be checked out by a mechanic?
