Help choosing Digital SLR

Featured Replies

I got it into my head to buy one of these after using a mates 350D a few times.

Anyway after hearing about the 450D I was gonna buy it, but a Photographer mate told me to go for the 40D instead. So bascially the below is what I was looking at.

Canon EOS 40D

Canon EOS 40D - Only £599.00 - Park Cameras Online

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM - Only £329.00 - Park Cameras Online

Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM

Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM - Only £379.00 - Park Cameras Online

Other equipment,

Battery Grip, Spare Battery, Memory Cards (2x 2GB Extreme), Bag (these are cheaper on 7dayshop.com - Online shopping made easy !)

Canon have a Promotion on certain items so All in about £1400

Any idea if 7dayshop.com - Online shopping made easy ! camera are imported from Asia? is they are then I can't get the promotion. There bundle price for the Camera & 2 lens above work out the same as the ParkCamera price AFTER the promotion cash back is deducted.

I believe I also need lens hoods, I assume that one wouldn't fit both lens?

The only issues I can find is that,

1) the 17-85 is a EF-S, so won't work with Full Frame Bodies, I assume the 40D is NOT a Full Frame Body................is this really an issue.

2) The 17-85 has dark corners, but you'd have to double the money to get the next Canon lens up.

3) IS drains the battery, but you don't get something for nothing.

4) Canon don't supply Len Hoods, will one work on both or do I need to get 2? What do they actually do?

5) the 70-300 lens gets soft after 200mm

I think the positives that both lens have IS and USM.

Any issues with the above or anything else you think I might need?

Any other places you'd consider buying from?

Not sure about the cameras but I've been using 7dayshop for years with no problems with any of thier stuff.

Try Sigma Lenses. My brother and his friends swear by them... He's a 400D and his friend is a professional photographer and uses them with a 30D (All Canon EOS).

I've an EOS 30D myself that I picked up on adverts.ie You'll find some great stuff there, if you're not afraid of second hand stuff.

if you're after a Canon, there's an ebay shop where they officially sell refurbs.

Canon Outlet

I was in this predicament a few months back. opted for the Canon 40D over a Sony Alpha as canon have the better lens support.

It was the first DSLR I have bought so quite daunted at first, to the point of chucking it back in the cupboard. lots of reading and experimenting later and slowly getting the hang of it now.

I have a sigma lens and just as good as the canon that came in the camera pack.

Cheers for the replies. I had a put throught the order before seeing the later posts here.

@bpm, how much did you pic up the 30D for, what lenses were on it?

I tried there but the 40D with a Kit lens were reaching 700stg for a re-con.

Jaysus I thought www.7dayshop were cheap, that place is even better. The camera is 30-40 pounds cheaper and the 2 lenses 20-30 pounds cheaper each.

I picked up a 7 month old 30D with less than 3000 pics for 400 Euro and it included a Tamron 72-200mm lens. Admittantly its not the best, but it is a good start.

Sounds like a good price. It has to be better than your original camera ;), it can get quite expensive this DSLR Lark

Don't speak ill of the dead :P Yeah, I've seen the receipts from my brother's collection. I'm glad I just borrow his lenses
