oil question

Featured Replies

I have a 55 plate Octy 4x4 with 13k on the clock on variable servicing. The missus tells me yestarday the oil light came on so she stopped at Halfords and put 1ltr of Castrol magnatec Diesel 10/40 in. The light went off.

Is this ok?

Ok for a topup only. The oil needs to meet vag standard 507.01 IIRC, and magnatec does not meet that standard. The correct oil is available in halfords, however watchout because there are 2 different viscosities. You Castrol Edge, and the one labled for VAG engines and IIRC is £14.99 for a litre bottle.

Thanks, so this 1 ltr shes put in wont damage anything then as long as it gets proper long life stuff next service ( in about 10k miles )?

it should be ok, I think even the handbook says its ok to do it in an emergency.

Halfrauds again!

IIRC correct 507.1 Shell Helix Ultra VX from your local friendly neighbourhood Skoda Dealer in a 1L bottle with a carry bag including wipes, gloves and paper funnel is only £11.99 + VAT = £14.08

;)

Just buy a kit as above and keep it in the boot for future use and buy a 4-5L can to keep in the garage and use for weekly top ups.

Regardless of how wrong the oil is, some oil is better than no oil.

In some ways I'd probably not wait another 10k for an oil change. Perhaps get a pella pump, a new filter and 5L of the correct oil and do a change that way.
