Ebay mintex discs+pad mini review

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Well I bought some of these some while ago now;

SKODA OCTAVIA 1.8 VRS MINTEX FRONT BRAKE DISCS & PADS on eBay, also, Skoda, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 22-May-08 10:54:10 BST)

Thought i'd give a little update as they are by far the cheapest for a branded set. First off they seemed ok, took a while to bed in really- longer than I have experienced before.

Now after what must be 3-4k on them, I must say....they are pretty rubbish. The front discs are scared with what only can be explained as a dent all the way around where the pad makes contact. They have got to be pretty soft!

Stopping power isn't great and they have now started juddering on anything past mild braking.

My advice, spend a bit more and get some quality discs + pads.

I had exactly the same experience and replaced them:confused:. I even got as far as contacting Mintex re whether they might not be genuine:eek:, took photos of part no.s etc. They reckoned they were ok but had no explanation. I had a discussion with someone else which made me replace with supposedly the same discs (but not the boxed set) but extreme pads, and so far alls been well. No explanations as to why

Interesting, as I'd heard on here that Mintex have stopped making Extreme pads because of them being extremely pad-hungry (although they've been OK with my ZeroSixty discs...???

I must admit i was tempted to go for the mintex for when mine need replacing so ta for the heads up.

There has been a few threads on here regarding the grooved discs, i would stay clear unless they have been heat treated after the grooves have been put in.

Does anybody know who makes the OE Skoda discs? I have found these to be excellent except when they get hot after heavy braking  but for every day driving they are good.

I'd stop buying dodgy stuff from eBay! That second link you've posted doesn't even list who makes the discs.

You get what you pay for and brakes are no exception. I would go with OEM discs personally (ATE brand I believe and around £90 a pair of fronts). If possible, go for DS2500s pads. Yes they're more expensive but they are very good. Around £100 for a front setup IIRC.

If budget allows, Tarox G88 discs would be where my money would go.

Thanks guys!

Tarox G88s look good but at £200+ for just the fronts, I can't justify that!

Infact all the good discs on that site seem to be £150+ just for the fronts. Maybe I'll stick the OEMs on with some DS2500s on. How long lasting are these? Lots of dust?

I have got original discs,DS2500 with castrol super response fluid and would recommend this set-up as it is a improvement over stock especially when pushing hard.

I'm much the same as Jay, with a similar fluid upgrade (obviously with the 312 upgrade fitted to a Fabia!). I actually run std EBC discs and while their pads are crap, I've always been pleased with their discs - and they're a good price.

With the DS2500s, dust production is excellent, considering the performance. Probably less than a std pad TBH.

Wicked, so should be able to get the fronts sorted for £200ish then if I do it this way.

How much for the fluid, and is this worth changing over the standard?

:)

I have the above and they have done me well for 18 months.

I'm not one for pushing her hard though.

Try Demon tweeks for the pads and fluid as it was the cheapest when i got mine, plus freedom members get 10% off.

Pads were £121 delivered, fluid is around £11 ltr and is worth changing so get a couple of ltrs for a full flush out with some spare.

I'd check our faithful site sponsor Opie Oils for fluid too, that's where I got mine from last time. My DS2500s came as part of the upgrade pack from a fellow Briskodian :) And the discs were from EBC Direct.

From previous experience with mintex pads on my VX, Mintex 1144's were great, if a little soft (ie tons of brake dust)but the 1155's were really good once warm and on the track,

Those on ebay to me look like cheap imitation chinease rubbish.
