Half started !?

Featured Replies

Sometimes when starting my felly (1289 mpi ohv engine) it fires so I let the key go and then it runs on what sounds like 1/2 cylinders (idles at 200-300 rpm !!!) sounds really strange too. When you press the accelerator it revs up and then idles at 900ish like normal.

Almost feels/sounds like low compression of some sort, but the engine only has 57k..... fresh 10w-40 oil every 5000miles .. is this too thin ?

Could this be something to do with the double spark system, as i know there is more powerful compression spark and a less powerful one.... could the ignition be out of sync?

this has happened about 15-20 times in the last 12 months, and once it refused to fire compleatly.

Spark plugs are NGK multielectrode ones (part no. BKUR5ET10 ) are these correct for the MPi ? fitted them about 17k miles ago.

please comment!

I'd say the oil grade is fine for the engine as described.

Not clear on what you mean by "double spark system". Is this an EMS using double-ended coils and the "lost spark" system, where you spark both the cylinder at TDC compression and TDC exhaust? If so, then I'd suspect the coil pack is starting to go down.

I have had this happen on my SPI. Seemed to be that I had disturbed the accelerator cable as happened after I filled up oil and had disturbed the cable, but pressing pedal seemed to stop it and hasn't happened since. So if it is theoretically possible the cable adjustment is causing it it's worth trying as it'll cost nothing :)

It's plausible; I had problems with the ZX stalling out on a cold engine when I took too much "free play" out of the throttle cable, and left the throttle slightly open as a result.

This happens to my car but only after it has been running and never from cold. I have no clue what is causing it and live with it as it always gets going.

My thoughts is some type of fuel supply issue or coil pack

Surely the coil pack (big metal thing that sits onto the sparkplugs) is effectively a relay. Shouldnt it just work or not work

its interesting to see others have this problem too.

Coils, irrespective of type, are step-up transformers, not relays. When they start breaking down, the problem is with either the core or the insulation.
