Adjusting Handbrake

Featured Replies

Anyone know what spanner (or tool) ill need to adjust the handbrake?

Cheers.

IIRC, just a spanner (adjustable should do you!) The adjuster is under the centre tunnel trim. Although if it's like the handbrake on SWMBO's car, the fact it's a bit slack is more of a sign that the rear shoes are worn...

Ah cheers ill see if I can dig one out

Was just planning to do it by removing the cup holder plastic at the back.

Its gone from about 3 clicks to about 5 more than likely its down to me making sure its definably on and stretching cables :)

I think there's an additional cover held on by Torx screws, but I might be wrong there! At a stab, I'd say the nuts for the adjuster were M10 or maybe M12...

Cant see any torx screws ..or am I missing something? :D

Looks a bit tight to get an adjustable spanner in there

Nope, just my bad memory :o

A 4" adjustable might fit in there, otherwise you'll have to get the correct size for the nut. Don't forget the do it with the handbrake OFF, otherwise you'll struggle!

I did this a couple of months ago too. I have the same removable cupholder so I did it the same way. I was just able to reach with an ordinary spanner, (from my Lidl toolkit, so nothing special about it). If i remember right I think it was a number "10" spanner.

Where is this on the car and how do i get to it (fabia vrs) would like to do it this afternoon, mines is at about 6 clicks lol

Also which way do you turn the nut to tighten it???

It's behind the ashtray / cupholder thing between the front seats. Turning the nut clockwise will tighten the handbrake.

So i have to remove the cup holder....

I'll go and have a try now and report back

before you all go adjusting the cable, take a look at the handbrake levers on the rear calipers , these can stick on slightly and eventually this leads to poor pad adjustment

pull the levers back to the stops then pump the brake brake pedal a few times to readjust the pads , the handbrake should now be ok , 2-3 clicks

don't forget also that if you have your foot pressed on the brake when you apply the handbrake , you will get more travel in the handbrake lever , this is normal

As Ric says but the original post was on a 1.4 MPI if i'm reading right. This will have drums on the back. do NOT adjust the cable unless the rear drums have been cleaned and adjusted first. You will find the cables will be fine and its th shoes that require adjustment, This will improve brake performance and correct the handbrake.

:)All good advise, but I'd just like to add that adjusting the handbake cable/s shouldn't be done without the rear of the car being jacked up to ensure that the rear wheels aren't binding as a result.
