Power to weight - the facts

Featured Replies

Now I'm not that fick to not be aware that maximising BHP per ton is probably a better thing than just maximising engine output. I'm saying this as recently I removed my LPG kit and I swear my car feels like it's had another remap. Less smoke, serious grunt and better handling. I think I've shifted around 40kg+ out from the back of my car with another 5kg taken out the bonnet. So 45kg saved which probably equates to around 4% of my car's weight? Also, I'm not sure if I've adversely affected the weight distribution, or maybe even helped it?

Makes me wonder more about seriously trying to lighten this car (without taking away most of the daily driver comforts like trim, door cards, dash, etc) as if I could get another 40kg out of it....

I guess I could also go on a diet.

put it on a boil wash as that shrinks clothes

You'll be doing a 'Shifty' next

Nope - I want to achieve as much but "behind the scenes" - maintaining a sense of decorum visually, but behind the scenes it's gonna look like a piece of dutch cheese.

yeah its power to weight that really counts and you have made your weight distribution worse for losing weight :)

45Kg is slightly over half the weight of an average male adult by the way :)

I'd guessed that - was going to say leave some metal for the wheels to anchor to

I guess I'm above the average weight then. :o

But it is amazing how heavy that lpg tank is! Perhaps 30kg is more realistic.

30Kg is a lot of weight, a normal bag of sand/plaster/cement is only 25Kg i think

It is usually 25 (worked in building trade before) and this tank feels as heavy if not more. I dread to think what it's like with 30 litres of propane in.

Hmm, seems to me I did a thread about this sort of 'thing' once

Might just have to resurrect it

well your 30 litres of propane is probably going to be around 25Kg i'd say so no tank Vs full tank could easily be saving you 60Kg+

just keep in mind that water injection will add some weight as well - up front if you use the OEM washer reservoir and have it full. May be an idea to locate one rearwards and perhaps even relocate the OEM tank there too - wonder how much it weighs full?

how big is it considering 1L of water weighs 1Kg

5 liters - over front axle..

Hmm, when it comes to the methanol thing, I'll probably be replacing the same kind of weight as the propane regulators, so not too worried. Still not sure whether to use the bigger oem tank, or go for a separate reservoir.

What's nice is that you can use pure water injection along with nitrous.

And that if you're smoking, the increased intake charge density burns the excess fuel.

You may find you dont need any methanol, only clean water...

well jason its only taken you 5 years to catch.....

If you really want to get serious, you'll have to do more than 'behind the scenes' weight loss.

Doorcards, all interior plastics, all carpets, seatbelts, all audio equipment and associated wires, sparewheel & jack, rear wiper, electric windows, roof lining, lightweight seats, airbags (replacing steering wheel). Those things that can be done fairly easily and on an Octy add up to weigh a significant amount.

Then you're onto making changes to the car, poly windows, smaller battery, aircon out, lighter bonnet etc etc but there is significant monetary outlay for taking it this far.

Depends how far you want to go..

IMO, you'll be fairly limited if you want to keep the OE look of the interior.

Could save some weight by removing things like the aircon & associated parts, a CD changer if you've got one and this might sound daft, but even 4 car mats probably weigh about 8kg together. It all adds up.

Some bits are already done. Carbon bonnet, aircon has all ben gutted out. It's just the hidden things I want to try. Battery is relocated in the boot which is more of a distribution thing than a lightening thing.

put some light wheels on it.. unsprug mass is very detrimental.

What about fabricating new door cards? A thin sheet of ally with a handle and winder fixed on, maybe painted black or skinned with a light fabric might not draw too much attention. Should save a few kilos per door too.

cut out the whole of the rear floorpan and fabricate a tubular spaceframe to weld in

The stock door cards actually weigh sod all really - just plastic. It's what is behind them which weighs a fair bit.
