Just realised I've owned 14 4WD cars !

Featured Replies

Anyone owned more ? Off-roaders don't count !

1. Mazda 323 Turbo Lux

2. Toyota Celica GT Four Turbo

3. Toyota Camry 4WD exec

4. Toyota Tercel 4WD estate

5. Toyota Corolla 4WD estate

6. Subaru Legacy 2.5 GX

7. Subaru Legacy 2.2 GX

8. Subaru Legacy Turbo

9. Subaru Impreza Sport

10. Subaru Impreza Turbo (x2)

12. Audi A4 Quattro

13. Audi A4 Avant Quattro

14. Skoda Octavia 4x4 Turbo

My top 3 on pure fun (not necessarily speed !) were:-

1. Impreza Turbo - For sheer raw power and involvement

2. Legacy Turbo - A 'Q' car with 9/10 of the Impreza's fun

3. Mazda 323 Turbo - Massively underrated and chuckable

= Toyota Tercel 4WD - 70bhp but driven on the limit all the time!

Any others to add to the list of what you've owned ?

- Deltas, Cosworths ?:drive1: :drive1:

How old are you? I'm 45 and I haven't owned 14 cars altogether yet!! Gosh I must be boring!!

Goodness me Fabpreza thats a heck of a lot of cars you've owned, let alone 4x4s!

Sorry, no 4x4s in my previous garage. I had a Peugeot 205 fascination instead! :)

Mid 30's.

If I'm still driving when I'm 70 I will get one of those laughably vintage Porsche 996 4x4 Turbo's. I mean - look at how narrow the tyres will seem. Windscreen wipers ! 'Wing' mirrors !

Is that your total of owned cars ? or is there more .

Personally , I have been driving for 30 years and have only owned 13 cars in total .

Sorry , have never owned a 4X4 , but out of your list I must admit to being a fan of the Legacy .

Obviously very slow with my reply , but we all seem amazed at the number of cars you have owned in a short time !

... just the 4x4 ones.

Can't remember the rest without checking the 'files' but I had a Mazda 323 1.8 GTi 3 door which was good fun, a Rover 220 GSi which wasn't as half bad as people made out (good engine).

By the way,Mellow - my first car was a YELLOW Polo L (895cc/40bhp) - trendy or what ? This once indicated 95mph on the clock downhill which was probably a true 88 !

I have owned:

Cortina MkII 1600 Deluxe

Cortina MkIV 2.0 GL

Escort MkIII 1.3 L

Cavalier MkII 1.6 GLS

Peugeot 205 something (small engine can't even remember what size)

Maestro 1.3L

Fiesta 1.1L

Mondeo 2.0 Ghia

Fiesta 1.25 Freestyle

Skoda Octavia SLX 1.8T

Plus driving about 8 company cars

10 privately owned cars total. And none very exciting either - from the Cavalier onwards they were mainly driven by Linda, my wife.

Where do you young guys get the money to drive your exotic cars on?

I presume it was a Honda engine , as your other cars lead me to believe you prefer Japanese cars to anything else !

I suppose its all about WHAT you spend your money on really. Certainly never rich, and mostly bought secondhand. Always loved cars.

Once took the Impreza to an upmarket track day and I was definitely the poor relation:-

30 cars and mine was the cheapest by a clear

I wondered that , obviously a lot more intelligent , or better paid than us ! ( probably both )

Or not married with kids.....

Mellow

An old cliche, but the Japanese cars never gave me any real trouble and most of them were fun to drive (ok not the Camry) It's just that the Japan has been into 4x4 road cars in a big way. Other makers except Audi came and went.

ps the Rover had a British 2.0 136bhp engine - my only company car

But I did just realise - I made an important omission from my list of privately owned cars above:

1983 Porsche 928S V8 4664cc - going to Santa Pod on Sunday for a blast .... :)

:D

I'd have thought the Celica would have been a beast to drive, yet you pick the unsightly Tercel.

Then again, never drove one, so can't tell! Yet I've always loved the look of every Celica model - and it's been my wife's secret favourite for years now...

70 hp - that reminds me of the Impreza 1.6 I once drove as a loaner. The AWD system was heavier than the rest of the car! Made absolutely no sense at all.

Oh, I haven't yet reached the age where I can tell that I owned 14 cars, let alone 14 AWDs! Or are you bored easily and a one-car-a-year sort of bloke? :D

Well, the Legacy was the car that converted me to AWD - the most "chuckable" fat saloon I've ever driven. (I have only owned five cars, but have driven over 50, so I know my way around.) Before the Scoob, I was strictly a Honda man - sporty engines, sporty ride. Always Japanese, though, like you, purely for reliability reasons, and was never proven wrong on that. Years and years of trouble-free motoring.

So you say you have been pleasantly surprised by the Octavia 4x4 in your first weeks of ownership? :D

Good, then I have something to look forward to...

 :drive1:

The Celica was a good long distance cruiser and very 'solid', but disappointing to drive.

It had very poor brakes and the power to weight ratio wasn't that different to the Mazda 4x4 I owned before it. Also, I had more 'scary moments' in the Celica than any of the other 4wd cars I've owned.

It was quite heavy and once the back end moved I found it too slow to put right ! Had a 'fishtailing' moment once in it - never in any other cars - including all the Subarus.

I chose the Tercel deliberately in my top 3 as although it was noisy, slow and underpowered, the chassis was really well-balanced, the steering sharp and well-weighted, and I remember driving it absolutely flat out between Lancashire and Yorkshire in all weathers - it was rewarding. I also drove it through over a foot of snow once (is that 30cms?) on normal tyres, when everyone else was starting to walk from their cars.

I've driven one and seen some since and yes they are old-fashioned, but I had some fun in one!

Really? What a disappointment.

So purposeful looks don't tell all! It goes to show that a good car on paper doesn't always equate to a good car in real life.

I passed my test in 1985, and am now on my 14th car. Some cars I hated so much I only had them a few months and others years. I have never driven a 4x4 though, although I have been in an impreza on the nurburgring.

Bet that was fun....! Saw a video of a P1 going round the ring once - how do they remember all the

corners at that speed ?!

Fabpreza

I have owned no 4x4s at all , but my dad bought a YELLOW Polo N with the same engine as the one you had , brand new on a T 78 plate (original MK1 with metal bumpers), and I learned to drive in it! Ive also had 15 cars since I passed my test in 1987 , not all of them good ones tho!

You don't. Strictly the Maestro was wifey's car as were both Fiestas. Strangely the Maestro wasn't such a disappointment as you'd think - comfortable, quiet and capable of some excitement if pushed hard - which it liked as a change from wifey's style of driving. And so easy to work on - nice simple old-fashioned British technology. The most satisfying moment I had with it was when I successfully diagnosed a sticking needle valve on the SU carburettor - so pleasing to hear the sweet smooth noise of a happy engine again after it was cleaned and readjusted.
