started as flat battery, charged it up, now the strange part airbag light comes on inter, but have no steering when it does. turn ignition off and on again it clears strange is it a safety precaution? the battery does not appear to be charging very well either

The Power steering system is Electro-Hydraulic, if the system voltage is too low it can trigger the PAS light, perhaps the same for the airbag system too?

this happened on a charged battery though? and if it was a voltage issue surely it would happen when the battery was on its knees.

I guess the battery is bust, and the current draw on the power steering is killing it even more.

A new battery should see the end of your trouble.
