Driving my fun pickup on the motorway the other day it suddenly developed a high pitch whine in 5th gear, so didn't drive it any more in 5th (yuk).

Anyone got any ideas? It whines in 5th at any speed but only under load, if you turn the engine off and glide with the clutch not depressed the whine goes. I have checked the gearbox oil level and whilst it was a little low topping it up has made no difference. I am thinking it is new box time but in case it is something simple I thought I would drop a post here first.

I have never had a car with so many problems yet I love it all the same.

guessing a gearbox rebuild, is it easy or just worth sticking another box in

A pair of new new nuts and an afternoon removing the end of the gearbox

cool, anyone got a step by step guide or do I need to wing it, I have rebuilt engines before but never a gearbox

thanks for that, also am I safe running the car at the moment as long as I stay out of fifth, just not going to be able to pull it apart for a bit
