Yeah just reading it, thats what made me ask in fairness!

I did mine months ago, following Basil's guide.

I made some comments on the guide; the most important being:

1. Dust sheeted the interior, then used an angle grinder to shorten(1" approx) the stem and extend the recess. The pipe cutter method seemed just too much like hard work.

2. By extending the recess on the stem you do not need to cut out the locating nib inside the knob.

3. Used a jubliee clip instead of re-using the oem clip.

Does it make much difference? Yes; smoother changes.

Is it worth doing then ?

:iagree:

I was taught to drive by my mum (who's an advanced driver), so my hand goes all over the place when changing gear: 1st-2nd, it's thumb-down with most of my hand round the gaiter; 2nd-3rd, it's thumb-up with my hand about 50:50 over gaiter and kn0b... etc. etc.

Not sure it would make a difference in my case, then. Although if you just drove with your hand resting on the top of the kn0b to make changes, then I guess it would have the same sort of effect...?

I can see it would work but i dont find the gear knob that high

I dont find it high either, infact i do prefer a higher stick.

But if it made a big enough difference i would try it.

i have thought about this but dont fancy hacking at my gear lever

I prefer a higher stick, but a shorter throw. I've mounted the whole gearlever assembley inside the car rather than under it on my Golf to bring it up, a little extreme though..lol.

Did this a few weeks back, though I didn't realise other had done it. I did it in my clio before too. Took about 20mm off the top, in the clio and in the vRS. Used a hacksaw in the Clio, and a jigsaw in the vRS!!!

Seems to sit a bit better now. And the reduced height results in what feels like a smoother shift.
