Grunching noise from front left side :(

Featured Replies

Driving the missus to the local supermarket yesterday I noticed a grunching noise coming from the front left when I turned left. This only happens when more than 3/4 lock is used.

Got down on my hands and knees to look for anything obvious but couldn't see owt (first thought was that the plastic wheel arch cover might of come away...but nothing. Bit worrying really as Ive had the car lesss then a year with only 10k on the clock

Just hope it could be something simple as I REALLY dont want to have to get the dealer involved as they are Sh*te!

Anybody had any similar noises or related problems?

Rich

Incredible coincidence! Got the same from I think front right. Its intermittent seems to be started by a turn but will continue in the straight ahead. It does not seem to be linked to the drive when powered, happens when coasting. Application of gentle brakes makes no difference, only seems noticeable below 30mph. driving over speed bumps does not cause it to start. Seems to go after a higher speed run. Its going to be difficult to prove to the dealer as it disappears for days.

Car is 1.9 TDI, 11 months 17000 miles.

If you suss it out please continue post.

Stone stuck in the brake? Fairly common with discs. First time it happened to me I called the AA as i thought it was the end of something but a quick poke around with a screwdriver dislodged a small stone.

Do a google search and you'll find plenty of DIY methods for sorting - providing this is the problem!

I'd say look for the stone in between the disk and sheild first. Although if the noise has gone it may have fllen out.

I think your car will be too new to have been affected with the steering rack issues on the A5 chassis.

Dodgy drop links are known to make some noise on full lock.

I have just removed the wheels and checked for stones, not one to be found also rocked and listened to wheels to check bearing play.

To give more detail it has been coming and going for the past week and sounds just like you might have a stone stuck as it has a regular gruh, gruh, gruh, to it. Up until now it sounded like a rubbing noise but today I had a real grinding noise, then after parking drove off and nothing! Sometimes its loud and others you have to listen hard to hear it. We and SWMBO think it is associated with turning L or R but it does occur when driving straight ahead after a turn at below 20/30mph.

How old is your car, there were issues with steering racks around 2005/2006 IIRC.

First registration was 04/06/07 may have been in stock some time then used at Skoda HQ MK.

Was sold as L & K to me but is actually Elegance with luxury pack.

Chassis number would reveal the build date.

From the reg cert

TMBGS21ZXxx13xxxx

Is this the right number?

That seems to be wrong.

Sorry fat fingers

TMBGS21ZX72xx6xxx

Seems to me it's 1.9TDi Iceland Green Metallic built 22/03/07

It's the drive shaft U joint. Fairly common if you hit potholes, make fast U turns or large turns, etc

The good news is it can be refurbished.

Got it booked in at the dealer on Friday morning so will see what they say.

Ironically, Im having FSD's + Eibach pro springs fitted at JKM on sat am....kinda worried that fiddling may make the problem worse..

Also unsure if the Eibachs will make the ride too firm but thats another issue.

Given the age and mileage of the car I had not considered CV joints but following Sebulbus's post I drove it on full lock L & R at low speed and can now induce a grinding knocking noise on demand . This will persist, at a much lower volume, for a few hundred meters in the straight ahead. Could the problem be the joints or something else?

Off to the dealer Friday afternoon:(
