MSN Messenger?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Ive just got a new Dell Vista laptop and wouldnt mind having MSN messenger on here again - I had a look last night and can only find Windows live messenger , is this a new version of MSN? If so , do you reccomend that I have it? Any websites rcoomended to download it from? Also a guide for how to download stuff wouldnt go amiss , as i havent downloaded anything off the net for years so Im a bit rusty! (cant remember what to click in the pop up dialog boxes for example) Oh , im still using dial up while I wait for my broadband to come , is it a long download?? Thanks for any help recived , sorry its a bit of a basic question to ask compared to some on here!!:)

Yeah its changed to live messenger.

Download it from Microsoft.

Hi,

As Lummox said its changed to live messenger. Infact a lot of microsoft programs have changed to incorporate the live suite. You can download it here:

Windows Live Messenger 8.5 - Computeractive

or:

What's new in Windows Live Messenger 8.5 - MSN On Windows Live UK

When you download from any of the links and launch the installer it will ask if you want to install other microsoft live products. You can choose what ones you want by putting a tick in the appropriate box.

I cannot remember how big the download for Messenger is. Obviously the more you wish to download the longer it will take. If you know someone with a Broadband connection you could download the installer on his/her computer then transfer it to CD or USB stick and install it on yours.

Hope this info helps.

Regards

Thanks for the replies so far. Now when the dialog box opens , i think there are 2 options for the installer , run or save (one puts it in a temp file from what I recall of loading stuff years ago) do I click save or run???

Thanks again

Run it.

One of the (few!) tech questions I can answer

If you click 'Save' you can specify where the setup file goes (my Downloads or Desktop). From there you could put it on a disk just in case you need to reinstall it at some point in the future or transfer it to another pc.

If you choose 'Run' the set-up process starts once the setup file is downloaded to your temp internet file. However, if you empty your temp internet file then the set-up goes away!

I've been advised to use the 'Save' and desktop option. HTH

Thanks for your input guys , much appreciated!

TBh I just run it. If you need to reinstall it you can just download it again. Saves clogging up space.

Hi,

I would tend to save as westerdam2 does. That way you have the install file if you need to reinstall at any time. To save space on your hard drive you could archive the installation files onto a CD or DVD or even better onto a USB stick if you have one.

One other thing,

If you buy software from the internet which is a download version, you should save this install file then archive it to disc once you have installed it. Before archiving it, i recommend creating a notepad document with any serial numbers you may require in order to run the full version of the program.
