Getting a car delivered

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a car which is about 400 miles away from me and would prefer to have it delivered on the back on a truck, rather than driven to me. I have asked the dealer to find out the cost from the company that they use, and i'm still waiting to hear from him. Although has said it will be quite a lot due to the distance.

So i thought that i'd post on here and ask if perhaps any members have used a transportation company before, or maybe recommend one to use. I would like to give a few a call and get the best price going.

Thanks

Where are you located ?

Im in Edinburgh, and the car is down near Surrey.

Wouldn't it be more cost effective to get a train there and drive it back yourself ?

As a guideline, GB to Ireland car deliveries cost 400 euro + VAT @ 21% (484) and that includes the ferry costs. It must be less than that.

Or pay someone local to you there fuel and quite a few beer tokens to take you there!

It does work out cheaper to drive it back, but it will take about 6 hours, and i will need someone with me too. It will cost me the travelling fare for the two of us, a full tank of fuel on the way back, and also the whole day taken up for both of us just travelling. This is why i thought that it will save a lot of hassle to have it delivered.

I would say work on about £1 a mile plus vat.

I'm from Edinburgh too, and know a guy who runs a car delivery company.

Alternatively...pay my way and i'll drive it back for free.

What about a flight down with EasyJet?

Is it a new car or a used car? I wouldn't want to buy a used car 400 miles away without seeing it and trying it out. I'd go with the Easyjet option as above personally. At least if you have any niggles you're not happy with you can just turn around when you are a few miles down the road (assuming it's from a dealer of course).

Its a used car that im buying, from a garage. Im flying down tomorrow to view and taking it for a extended test drive it etc before paying for it then coming back up the same night.

I have asked a relative to go and see the car, and he said it is in good condition inside and out. Im pretty sure that i will be happy with it. So i am just trying to find out some prices to get it transported up to me.

Would you not be tempted just to drive it back tomorrow if you like it ?
