110 tdi mpg?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

My Ovtavia estate is the 110 bhp varient, it has a 55 litre tank and on does 550 miles to the tank. I have been driving it very carefully and i'm somtimes getting 60+ mpg according to the computer. but if you work out the actual mpg it's only 45 to the gallon. I have just bought the car so it has just been surviced and it only has 65000 on the clock.

I would be interested to hear from other people with this engine to see what they can get out of theirs. My passat 105 pd (remapped) seems to be more economical which i'm surprised at i can get 600+ from that tank. I honestly thought i would get more from the octy.

Many thanks Tom

My 90 TDi will do around 500 miles from fill up to warning light on. Reports low 50s mpg.

Thanks mate i thought a 90 would be better than that for some reason. I suppose it depends on alot of factors.

My 110 tdi averages about 48-50mpg. your passat would have a larger tank,so more range is possible. The trip computer in 1st mode gives your projected mpg if you continue to drive in the same way. In trip mode 2 the cars average mpg for i think last 1000 miles is displayed this takes into account low mpg as engine warms up etc. My computer is about 5% up on real mpg. Its the same error on speedo.

I have the same model and engine as yourself with 58,500 on the clock.

Although I have only had the car for 7 months, I have kept a record of fuel put in and mileage every time I fill up. I always fill until the pump cuts out and then add more up to the next whole litre.

The average is 45mpg and the long term (memory 2) in-car report is 46mpg.

However, this is mostly short journeys around town with a heavy load in the boot. On longer 10 mile dual carriageway journeys the on-board read out is around 56 mpg including the cold start.

Being stuck at at closely spaced traffic lights really makes a big difference as does not getting the oil hot (which needs at least 10 miles as I found in my previous car with an oil temp gauge).

I would expect something around 55-60 on a long motorway journey at 70ish mph.

During the week I get a reported average of 46-48MPG. On a run the other week from Manchester to Conwy, with 3 kids, me and a boot load of camping gear, and travelling at 70ish, I got a reported 58MPG.

My Dad has a 2.0 140BHP desiel Laguna Estate, and even on a run he only gets 45MPG (ish)

Thanks Guys i'm going to fill up fully and see how i do, because the cars so new to me i haven't filled up fully yet. sam 95 it's interesting what you said about tha range of my passat because the stated tank size i thought was 55 litres (the same as the octy) however it does seem to be bigger than that. do you guys fit exactly 55 litres in and what range do you get from that tank. I was begining to think there was something wrong with the cars on board computer but it seems mine is about right.

I know this isn't the most exiting thread in the world but with the price of diesel at the moment i just want to make sure i'm getting the best out of my new car

Thanks Tom

Mine was a 50 litre tank rather than 55 and I'd get between 550 and 650 on a tank without trying too hard.

With fuel prices as they are now I'm sure I'd get closer to 700 if I made the effort but I do a fair amount of motorway runs.

If you are stuck in town all the time you won't be doing too badly

Thanks Alex

To be honest your figures are closer to what i was hopeing for from my car. I live in shropshire in the middle of no where, so it's mostly A roads and i use cruise on them as much as possible. I will have to keep an eye on this next fill up and see how it goes. You say that yours was a 50 litre tank that interesting if mine's the same that will make me feel a bit better.

Tom

I'm 95% sure they were all 50 litre tanks , though it was possible to jam open the air vent (the button is just inside the filler) and also get fuel into the expansion tank to squeeze a bit more in.

I did do 700 on a couple of tanks , and that was with the climate control on all the time. It should be a very economical engine and is capable of a genuine 60mpg if driven correctly

I've been averaging about 52mpg (based on calculating it not the trip computer) Got about 70 when I spent the day trawling along the motorway at 60 all the way.

I know I have a problem with the engine coolant temp sensor which I suspect affects the fuel consumption

One thing to remember is not to granny it everywhere and give it a good blast now and again or you'll just end up with a sooty turbo.

I have just spoke to my wife she has just filled it up and sure enough only managed to get 50 litres in it. We got 560 out of the last tank so it works out around about 51 mpg which is much more like it. Phew:D:D:D i'm happy now.

Thanks for all your help guys now if you could just do something about the world price of diesel that would be great;)

Hi Trundle

yeah i have read a few threads about the turbo issue. I am going to go and get some millers diesel sport next week and give it some beans on the way home. Is that what the best thing to do rev it hard now and again? should i do it once a week/month are there any suggestions from the panel?

Thanks Tom

Take a look here.:)

Thanks trundle

All a bit worrying i will have to try putting my foot down now and again. the 110's such a good engine it's too easy to cruise around in 5th most of the time. i will have to write it on my hand "REVS"

I fill up when the computer reports 10 to 20 miles left in the tank. The average fill over the last eight refills was 46.875 litres, using the procedure I posted above.

I keep a running record of fuel consumption in an Excel spreadsheet so that I can the variation due to different type of motoring, the effects of winter and summer, towing, long and short journeys etc.

In the past this has been useful in spotting problems before they become serious and poor garage "adjustments". Call me sad if you wish.......
