Smelly air con

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Ive done a search and cant seem to find anything, so:

My air con is fine until i switch it off and have just the fan blowing. It starts to smell damp, or as my mate describes it "like a wet dog" :(

Any ideas as to what this might be and how to fix it??

Cheers

;)

Do you use the air con very often? Could be just mould in the system, I have this now and again but normally seems to clear a top tip is to have the system on once a week for about 30 mins while your driving the car.

Err i use it in the summer most days. Its strange - If say, i have the air con on during the day and then at night I get back in (but dont have the air con on) it stinks!

I have started putting it on the hottest setting to dry it off which seems to sort it, but takes a while and makes my car a bloody furnace.

Its a 53 plate by the way if the age matters...

Covered about 46,000 times on here before - try "pollen filter" in a search.

Mine does this too, i always have air-con swtiched on.

But in the event that it gets switched off...it stinks.

I've had one of the air con cleaners in the car fora ges now, but keep forgetting to use it.

Mine has begun to do this. Pollen filter is new so it definately not that.

Buy a can of air con cleaner from Halfrauds.

But with your aircon it is recommended to use it once a month for at least for 30 mins to stop any bacteria building up in the system, otherwise the system won't work properley which I have found out with other cars I have owned with air con.

The cleaner i have is supposed to get rid of bacteria etc..

So i'll try it anyway.

Cheers guys. I'll get some tonight and let you know how i get on.

Wet dog isnt enjoyable!

Dettox or supermarket-brand alternative works just as well! ;)

Dettox is one of the best as I used a couple on my focus when I had it, same problem

IIRC a wise techie once said if you are using the gas bomb thing to clean the system remove your pollen filter first.

Can you not just get your air con serviced. I know its expensive but it'll get re-gassed and prob get rid of the smell

Regas won't do anything for the smell - the smell is from the air trunking.

I have heard that running it at max heat for a while (open the doors !) can kill off the nasty buggies.

Like the idea of using Dettox though ! I suppose you'd do the same as with the "bombs" and leave it on recirc for a while as it flushes round all the bends :)

I had this problem with my Octavia. It was cured by having the aircon given an anti-bacterial clean after it had been tested and recharged.

I always blame my farts on dodgy air-con when my girlfriend is in the car. I don't even have air con.

LIDL / ALDI do them as well at less than half the cost.

Run it on cold (LO) for 10-20 minutes

Run it on hot (HI) for 10-20 minutes.

Put it on normal, take out the pollen filter and run a couple of good squirts of dettol into the air intake for the A/C (Usually in the passenger footwell area) with it on recirc.

Put a new pollen filter in and run the car on hot for a bit.

Hopefully smell now gone :)

I have used a can cleaner from Halfrauds and it worked very well. Wife complained about wet dog smell in her car. Bought can for a couple quid and used it and now she is happy and my ears hurt less!!!!!
