Loose brake pads

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My front pads seem to be loose?

When manoeuvring i.e. 3 point turns ect I get a knocking noise from the pads when I brake. the outer pads seem to be slightly loose in the caliper, I have now changed the pads 3 times using genuine Skoda pads, the only thing that’s stops the knocking is copper grease on the back of the pads, but this only last a while as the grease thins out over time. There is no air in the system as I have bled the brakes and fitted new discs.

Any ideas guys?

I've noticed the same thing, I greased mine but all this did was to soak the grip backing off the pads, sounds like I have a few empty bottles underneath on some roads.

The usual cause of this is over-compressing the pad anti-rattle springs during fitting.

Not sure I fully follow that Roto, when fitting them you put a pad on each side of the carrier and slide the caliper over the top, tighten the bolts up and that's it.

Or do you mean we damage the spring in fitting the pads by effectively flattening them out in the process? I can't think of any other way to fit them though.

Okay I have bought new springs and fitted as supurbia said but still the same problem any other possibilities anyone please? its really embarrassing as I am a taxi driver and people keep commenting on it?

hi neon

i'am also a taxi driver with a superb.

had the same problem with pattern part pads.

less so with vw pads but still noticible when reversing

then dabbing brakes. it seems to go away after several k.

by the way just changed cheapo rears they have done 30 k

the original skoda pads only did 13 k.

so i use originals in front and pattern pads in rear.

Another cause of pad rattles in the Teves calipers fitted to the front of the B5.5 is worn rubber slider bushes.

If the pins are not lubricated with silicone grease, the rubber picks up on the running surface of the pin and destroys the bush.

The OE (Textar) rear pads are very soft. What make were your longer-lasting replacements?

i think the pads were "premium" brand cost about £15.

my mate runs with cheapos on his superb 90k + still on

original rear discs and our council are keen on them.

the only thing to remember is to bed the rear pads in

which is no problem to myself(couple of days running)

dont leave on handbrake on a 1 in4 hill after just fitting

okay so far i have bought new calipers bushes pins discs pads and anti rattle springs but the pads still rattle, i`m sure it`s the anti rattle springs but thay are new any ideas?

the only way i seem to stop the pads rattling is to flatting the edge of the with a hammer, lay them on a flat vice and tap the end of them where they slide on the caliperpixel.gifpixel.gifpixel.gifpixel.gifpixel.gif

the only thing left to replace is the carrier everything else is brand new but i have spent a fortune replacing parts and not rectifying the fault.

I'm also a taxi driver and the pads rattle on mine also, can't say as i've ever had customers comment on it though.

Anyway I know how to make the problem disappear - turn the radio up. ;)
