tint on wing mirror glass?

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Finally took the plunge at the weekend and ordered an Octy Vrs TFSI estate. When I was taking it for a test drive I noticed that the wing mirrors had a slight blue tint to them. First of all I thought it was just a reflection from the bodywork, but the salesman confirmed that there is a blue tint on the mirror glass which is standard on the race blue VRs as it's anti dzzle for night time driving.

Can anyone out there confirm this please? As it was raining on Sat I foud the combination of the water droplets and the blue making it difficult to see anything clearly behind me!

Cheers,

Balham

 jeez, the things salesman say!!

The blue 'tinge' on the mirrors is a feature of the Tunnel Lights/Rain Sensing Wipers option, I believe it helps with anti-glare from headlights of cars behind you. Order the car without it and I believe you'll get a more 'standard' looking mirror.

Thanks for the reply, Makefish. However as I'm buying as a used car I guess I'm stuck with it? I'll give them a call to see if they can swap it out.

I wouldn't swap it if I were you as over time you'll get used to it and find that it's a usefull feature imo. Stick with it and I think you won't regret it :)

The blue tint is an absolute pain. When I bought my L&K I enquired about replacing the blue glass with standard. As the mirrors incorporate heating elements I was told that the cost would be 'considerable'. I've never bothered to check the price I must admit.

Decided to ask again and was told this time that it's standard on all Octavias except for the Classics...

I'll give the blue mirrors a blast for a while to see if I get used to it.

Mine is an Ambient model and i have not got blue tinits.

Blue tinted mirror glass is only available as standard on the L&K (July 2007 on). Prior to July 2007 the L&K had auto dimming door mirrors. AFAIK blue tinted door mirrors have never been available either as an original fitment, or optional extra on any other Octavia version. Presumably the tinted glass could be ordered as a spare. IMHO the blue tinted mirrors are a very poor feature and I would be delighted to swap them for the clear version.

Ahem. We bought our Octy L&K in May 2006 and it came with photochromic mirrors - cetnral driver's and both wing mirrors. Absolute magic - they dim as the idiots close up on you from behind, so you never have to faff about with manual dipping.

Are you saying Skoda UK are no longer doing this? If so, slapped hands all round.

Can't say I have noticed any tint on mine, I would go out and check by my octy has gone back to the bodyshop for a third attempt and fixing some crash damage.

Honestly I recall I noticed them on first drive,

then I quickly get used to them.

Not a great feature, but not at all a problem!

Yup that's it exactly! How do you find them??

well im gunna rock the boat, i like the blue tinge, brilliant for driving in bright light and find no problem with it gets dark, headlights tend to give other cars away :P

Fine.

No problems atall, hardly even notice them to be honest

Even Skoda Estelles and Rapids had blue tinted door mirrors!!!

Let's try to get this clear! L&K models before July 2007 had automatic dimming exterior mirrors presumably linked to the rear view mirror light sensor. Model year 2008 L&K's (i.e. cars built after July 2007) were fitted instead with blue tinted mirrors but still had the automatic dimming interior mirror. This was a very definite retrograde step, presumably to save money. AFAIAA automatic dimming exterior mirrors are no longer fitted to any Octavia model and the blue tinted mirrors are only fitted to the L&K. However, I stand to be corrected.

Erm... Have you seen the pic i posted?

Mine isn't an L&K and has Blue Tinted Mirrors...

I can assure you that it is not just the L&K with the blue tint mirrors.

My vRS (Nov 07) has them and I find no problem with them at all. The tint is so light that I originally thought it was just the reflection of the Race Blue paintwork.

All very strange - not that it really matters :D I still don't like the blue tint!

mine are blue and don't give me any problems, like someone said you soon get used to it and will forget it is any different to normal

........and that's not true either! What utter crap some of these dealers talk!

Completely agree! Think I'll come here from now on to find out any facts as I've learnt far more from this forum than anywhere else

Well I don't have it on mine, so if you want to do a swap on the mirror glass and you're around my way I'd be open to the idea.
