Got stuck removing door panels!

Featured Replies

Well, the other day my window would not close properly. At the time I'd shelled out £600+ on various service and repairs so thought I would tackle this task by myself, as it cant be too hard!

Anyway, I got this far:

The door seems about read to come off, but the audio lead running through the centre holds it in place! Anyone know what the trick is to get this audio lead disconnected? There seems to be a clip inside the door (near where the lock mechanism is), but I cant see it and dont know what I'm dealing with!

Any advice would be appreciated!

fwiw the problem is that one of the clips snapped that the wire goes through. Will need to get a new one from a breakers but need to get this panel off first :D

you will be lucky to get the clip from a scrappie ,

a new window regulator is usually required

Will take a look and cross my fingers - I have a quote for £30 for a regulator assembly so not too bad I guess if a visit doesnt prove fruitful.

Any idea how to disconnect the audio lead though?!

What audio lead?

The main wiring harness that goes around the door and through the regulator is removed by taking the connector off the door catch inside the door then feeding it out.

That's the lead (wiring harness) I'm trying to remove, but I cant work out what shape the connector is and how to disconnect it.

Up under the door lock. It has a locking catch on it that needs to be pressed in to remove it (it pulls downwads IIRC). You'll also need to unhook the door lock pin from that panel as well and be careful you don't break the clip that holds it to the door laock whlst your at it (I did but managed to tie wire it back on).

It's easiest to leave the lock attached to the carrier, as in:

VWvortex Forums: DIY - Replacing the front door window regulator clips and/or door lock module

If you need a new regulator, it comes complete with a new carrier for about £70. Not sure what you would be getting for £30.

Someone should buy that bloke several drinks. That's got to be one of the most comprehensive guides to disassembly/reassembly since airfix!

Useful guide that, thanks

Managed to get a bit further, now discovered one clip is still intact and needs seperating from the window. Should be easy enough to get to tomorrow I think.

(all a bit ironic/embarrassing given that I work for a company that manufactures interior door panels...) :P

Normally you would undo the two 10mm/T30 bolts holding the window in place through the two big black grommets and lift up the window before removing the ancilleries carrier.

Finally sorted this afternoon. That clip seems pretty easy once you know what it looks like and how to remove it! bolt was easy enough to get to.

Just need to order assembly and put it back together (should have fun with that!)

Picked up assembly yesterday - quite surprised to see it includes the panels and everything attached! I just need to transfer the speaker onto the new panel. Bought a riveter, the central part of the rivets have come out the back but speaker wont budge. What the trick to removing rivets (without a drill)? I thought by removing the central stem they should have just come away but no such luck.

Sorry it'll be a drill job I'm afraid

as a matter of interest did you get it for the £30 you said in your earlier post??

Picked up a drill this evening - about time I got one really.

kwacka I paid £69 in the end (trade price), which isnt too bad I guess. Spent about the same on tools (drill, riveter, etc) to fit it. But at least my tool box is looking a bit healthier. :)

Just drilled the rivets out, and riveted the speaker onto new assembly. For future reference (if anyone reads back and is in a similar predicament) the rivets are 5mmx7mm.

That guide is fantastic that must have taken him yonks to do that,

I got one of these, kicks a$$

having now replaced 2 regulators, I find it easier to drill out the rivets holding the regulator and re rivet the new one in place, keeping the original carrier
