Coolant temperature warning light

Featured Replies

Hi all,

The coolant temperature warning light of my skoda fabia 1.4 (petrol, 2004) has started coming on when i start the car cold (with the 3 warning beeps) after about 15 seconds.

Once the car is warm if i turn off and turn back on this doesn't happen.

I've checked coolant and oil levels and both are perfectly fine and no leaks seem apparent and there is no 'mayo' substance on the inside of the fuel filler cap. I've checked the fuses as the manual recommends as it suggests the radiator fan fuse may be gone. There is no guide as to which fuse it is but i believe it is one of the ones on the battery and all seems fine!

Anything else? oh yes, the temperature needle doesn't go above the normal 12'oclock mark, and the car seems to be behaving as normal! Also, the warning light comes on even if i turn on the ignitition to the first position without starting the engine!

I've gone as far as i can, can anyone suggest what might be causing this and what the fix may be?

Many thanks, Paul

I'm guessing its an 8v, if so check the right hand side of the cylinder head as you look at it, look for the word Temac or the letter 'T' on the edge of the head gasket. Thats the modified gasket.

Most common fault is a small amount of oil escapes into the header tank (sometimes the header tank looks a darker yellow colour than normal). The oil collects on the prongs of the sensor and causes the light to come on.

Remedy...

1. Replace head gasket with modified one

2. If modified gasket already fitted, re torque headbolts

3. Replace header tank, short term fix.

4. Bridge sensor wires out so light goes off.

I get a similar problem with my Octavia vRS 1.8T. Get the chimes and light come on when first starting up, then if engine is switched off and re-started its fine. Octavia owners think it could be scaling on the sensor, but any other advise is appreciated

I had the same issue on my fabia, I cleaned the prongs on the sensor and topped up the coolant and it never occured again

  • 2 months later...

I've got exactly the same problem as Paul on my fabia 1.4. thebloyn suggested cleaning the prongs on the sensor. I'm going to give this a go but can someone tell me where i can find this sensor and how to clean it.

With many thanks
