horrendous coolant leak

Featured Replies

Hi All,

felicity has developed a horrendous coolant leak at the rate of 2-3 litres per day. Leak only occurs while engine running and shortly after stopping engine. As of yet, i have been able to keep on top of it and have not yet got the "mayonaise" of death in oil filler cap so im fairly sure i have not cracked the head or gasket.

The leak appears to be coming from the water pump housing, then running down the metal coolant pipe directly below it and then onto the splash plates under the engine. The pump appears intact and is not loose against the block, the belt is taut and not overly tight. the coolant appears to be coming out of the housing directly above the lowest securing bolt. I have tightened all the nuts to no effect.

What i was wondering is:

Can a water pump just "crack"?

Would it be worth smearing some liquid metal around the housing where i think it is cracked?

Better to just get the pump replaced?

Approx how much would be a fair price for parts and labour at a garage?

thanks for all your help on this one!

Dunno about the price , but i would change the pump,

Try jorily skoda for a new pump, he can be found via ebay

Agreed; there are a number of ways a water pump can fail and start leaking, mostly associated with the gasket between it and the block, or the bearing seal.
