Cam Lobe Wear.

Featured Replies

Fecking car is doing my nut in.

New engine is not running as well as the old one did. Ive got a diffinate kind of missfire at 2000-3000 rpm.

Its basically running abit rough and as though its got a really wild cam in it

Anyway ive just wipped the cam cover off to reveal these nastys, All the cam lobes show definate signs of wear, theres a definate flat on each cam.:mad::mad:

How easy is the cam shaft to change on the pd130? Anyone ever attempted one DIY before?? Suppose theres always a first for everything

Hmmm. I would also be asking the question what caused the wear. Putting a new shaft in might only be part of the issue.

Well the engine has only supposed to have covered about 30k....... After looking at the engine and hearing it run it sounds like its done way more than that.

Its probably been run on the wrong grade of oil, or thrashed from cold daily.

I would say that. I think the 505.01 spec is partly down to pressures met at the cam lobes. I am sure someone on here knows a lot more about it than I do.

My old man used to reprofile cams with a mig and grinding wheel (They always useed to run fine but then the engines he worked on would run ok with no matter what....)

I think there is a recent thread on performance cams.

I had outside help but I was there for the whole process. Was not " too hard" to change. You'll need a new cam, new tappets and shells, plus renew any bolts being undone.

To save you some money I have 8 very good condition tappets from an ASZ engine. Cost around £8 each from memory brand new.

That does look like lubrication failure, either as said before, the wrong oil grade or low oil pressure again. Have you checked the oil pressure with a trusted gauge John?

Most independant garages I've dealt with don't have a clue about the special oil requirements of a PD motor and just want to use an oil of the correct viscosity but, as mentioned above, it's the special addatives in PD oil that help the cam cope with the massive loads generated by the PD pumps.

I don't think cam change is that different to most engines other than resetting the cam to PD pump clearances.

Good luck with it, you must be due for a run of good luck soon.

i hope i don't have as much bother as you have had......

Wanna swap bootlids and rear bumper :)

Why whats up with yours?

The rear bumper on my car is really quite badly scratched.

Just been offered 4k part exchange against a fiesta sport van......

So i think its time to yet again decide to keep it.

Ouch, sorry to hear of the double whammy you've had.

Good luck for the future

Could you not use the cams out of your previous engine? Or are they wrecked as well?

Cam ;) Singular not plural.

Seen that quite a few times, down to not using the correct oil.
