AVG 8 question??

Featured Replies

 Have been running the latest free Avg antivirus package since upgrade (version 8)

Virtually everytime I log on the avg symbol in bottom right bar displays with a

big ! over it, suggesting I need to do an update, even though 'auto update' is supposedly

on? So anyway, when I bring up the avg box it says I may not be protected

(update manager shows as red)

So I click on 'update' and the progress bars go across, update manager goes back to

green and it says I'm protected, but it also says 'no new updates found'??

Anyone shed some light on this or suggest (in fairly simple terms:O) any changes

I should make to my settings?

Thanks in advance:)

Open the AVG control panel and double-click "Update Manager". What are the settings? Is there a tick in the box "Start automatic updates"? If not, you'll get the big red !

If it's ticked, I really don't know. I run AVG on my laptop, so I'm not always connected to internet on start-up. Then AVG give me a message that connection has failed, but the red ! disappears after that.

Could it be your firewall blocking it?

Maybe some tips to be found here?

Cheers for that, however when I put tick in 'start automatic updates', set a time in the box for auto updates and saved changes, if return to that page again the tick has gone:confused:

Now that'sweird indeed.

Maybe you should uninstall/reinstall and see if it helps. Not very tempting, but there's an easy way out:

From the control panel, choose "Tools" > "Advanced settings" > "Ignore faulty conditions". Tick the box for "Update manager" - that should sort it? Of course then you must remember to check that you are updated regularly.

BTW, have you the latest version of AVG (8.0.135) that was released Tuesday? Well, probably since you should have got an automatic upgrade notification. If not it might be a good idea to upgrade.

 Didn't get notification of an upgrade?

Also when clicking on advanced settings a box comes up with

'error during plugin loading' uninstalling and reinstalling not appealing, how can I

upgrade to latest version??

Thanks

Ive had a few problems with AVG8 recently... seems they have been releasing updates that either dont work or require a reboot.

Its kinda fixed itself now, but ive also noticed it has added linkscanner support for Firefox3 (which ive disabled because its a pain) basically if you use google or something, it will "access" the first 10 results on the page in the background to ensure they are not harmful. while this is good for total interweb n00bs, it creates more traffic at your end and the webhosts end

Noticed that too, Google search results have grey 'stars' next to them that, slowly,

acquire green ticks, signifying they are 'safe'. All very nice but the search process

through Google etc seems slower for it.:(

mine seems fine and no problems

HTH

:slant: Going to just leave it as it is. Just a case of clicking update before

going online, other than that it does its job.

Easy to forget it's free, and in many ways better than my old Norton, Imo:)

Thanks anyhow:thumbup:

Sounds to me if there's something dodgy with the program so even if it takes you a few minutes and is tedious I would go for the uninstall/reinstall option.

Just remember not to use the Windows control panel remove program function. Instead, click start/all programs, look for the AVG Free 8.0 folder and choose "uninstall AVG Free". Then download the latest version and install.
