CD Changer Surgery

Featured Replies

My CD changer decided to jam yesterday when I tried to remove the CDs. It's the standard changer ina MkI octy.

Took it out and set about dismantling it and found it had tried to jam CD2 into the slot occupied by CD3. Freed the cassette and jammed CD and tried it back in the car. It won't recognise CD1 at all, doesn't even try to pick it up, it takes the other 5 disks and plays OK, but all except 3 make a rubbing noise when it plays. They play fine without skipping. When you eject the CDs it returns to the rest position for CD2.

I think something is out of alignment but I'm not sure what. Has anyone else tried a spot of surgery on their changer.

Cheers.

I had something simillar with my old mondeo changer. Have a good look at the mechanism to make sure that the movable carriage is straight and level. its possible that the jam has caused part of the mechanism to go out of alignment so the slots dont line up right. What happens if you try and play CD6, and when trying to play CD1 does the display show CD1 when it is really playing CD2.

It happily plays CD6 although with a rubbing noise, it starts on CD2 and if you try to select CD1 it says No CD1.

There are effectively 7 positions for the player, the six CDs and a position used for eject above CD1, as CD3 play perfectly and is in the middle of range of movement and it seems to be worse as you move away from it, 6 is worse than 5 which is worse than 4 etc. I'll have another crack at dismantling it and try and check if the mechanism looks straight and lined up.

Cheers for the tips Manny.

if you can, try and connect it up whilst its in bits then you can visually see whats happening and causing the strange noises. It sounds like the front part of the carriage has slipped a cog possibly.

Thought of that but the electronics obscure the mechanism. I've had it running with the cover off but I can only see about half of the disk and the laser. The wiring is too short to have it plugged in but not in place. The mechanism is at the bottom and appears to be between two metal plates. Cheers anyway.
