Home cinema subwoofer opinions/advice

Featured Replies

Looking at getting a subwoofer for my surround set-up, have a limited

budget though, wonder what you people in the know think:confused:

Here's a link to one I have my eye on, any views??

Pioneer SW160

Have asked on AV forums, but they no speak to me:(

Am thinking 'Lady E' could be a good source of advice;)

Seems alright :)

Best thing is to listen to it first though

Has it got any reviews? One possible problem with that sub is the base. if you have wooden floors it may well vibrate on the floor. A decent sub usually has the driver speaker pointing towards the floor and the feet should ideally be pointed cones to give the unit extra stability under heavy bass vibration.

For a limited budget, see if you can get a Yamaha TS-15 on ebay. Bout £50 will get you one, if you want the rarer black (which I have) then £75-100

The bass is awesome. We have to run ours in 'night mode' as it's so loud - even turned down!

I can't comment on the Pioneer as I've not had one. I currently have GALE 4070-MAP at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc. and its great, I tend to have the bass frequency turned down as it is very loud and although our neighbour is hard of hearing she knows when we put a DVD on or if I'm listening to music as it vibrates through the walls if turned up too high :o

:) Thanks for the comments.

Yes, looked at the Gale one (on net) Richer Sounds do some cracking

prices on selected stuff. Might sit tight and keep an eye on prices, would

like a Mordaunt Short 'Alumni9' as my fronts and centre are by them, out

of my budget at the mo:(

I too was a bit confused by the 'plinth' thingy on the Pioneer:confused:

Cheers

:) Good taste, I've got 905i centre and 902i fronts on attacam stands. (sony DG720 receiver)

Was going to go for floorstanders for fronts (906i/914i's) but using

902i's for fronts are more than adequate for my 13'x14' room, and it

freed up cash for a subwoofer;)

Wouldn't rule out an impulse by on the Gale now:O

My dad got the 'quad lite' 5.1 system last week, awesome. sub is 29kg:eek:

I have to admit the floorstanders do give a little more bass than the book shelf speakers but with that gale sub there wasn't much to worry about. I only went for the floor standing speakers because I didn't have a stand to put them on and didn't want to mount them to the wall.

I bought all of this when we lived in our last house which had a huge room and even then this setup was a little overkill for the room but our current house this is setup in a 12ft x 14ft room which is on the adjoining wall to our neighbor
