18" wheel widths

Featured Replies

I'm looking at changing the standard wheels on my '53 Octavia vRS for a set of 18" alloys, as the std 17's are starting to get a bit tatty, cost me too much for tyres (fitting the std 205's), and take too long to clean.

Anyway, what is the reccomended width an tyre size for this setup. I've assertained that I need a 5x100 PCD at ET35, but can't find any definitive advice on width - it looks as though some people have had rubbing problems with 8.0"?

My suspention is unmoddified, but the rear of the car does sit low due to the ICE in the boot, and I often heavily load the car going rock climbing, camping etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

7 or 7.5" ?

I got 8 x 18 TSW Kayalamis and NO rubbing whatsoever! Also handles v well.

How can the standard VRS wheels take you "TO LONG TO CLEAN" wtf!

I've got 8x18's on the front and 9x18's (ET44 I think) on the back with a 20mm spacer.

Only rubbing I get is on the front drivers side inner arch, but even my standard 17's rub that!!

Ok, I can see wanting to change a set of slightly scabby looking standard wheels, but if you're prepared to fit 18s, why weren't you prepared to fit 225s on the 17s? After all, 225/40R17s on standard offset 7x17s should sort the scabby wheels, and avoid clearance issues.

18x8s on mine with 225/40R18 and no rubbing issues. That said i do know that the rears on mine had to be machined to stop rubbing but i dont know what offset they are now or were before.

Not sure that actually helps now i read it back to myself, lol

Regards

Garry

Also keep in mind that the offset will vary with wheel width, ET35 will be ok at one width but not another.

RichieVRS: ok, so they don't take that long to clean, I guess i'm lazy, and trying to justify buying some new wheels - have seen a set I really like the look of.

KenONeill: The damage is not kurbing, so the wider tyres wouldn't have helped, it's more that the surface has bubbled in a few place. Again, me being picky and trying to justify spending the cash! Did consider the 225's last time I changed tyres, after reading it here, but stuck with the original fitment in the end.

mannyo; I was wondering that myself: whilst the std offset is ET35, it would make sense (to me, at least) that the offset should differ with width - any idea whether ET35 would be within limits for an 8.0" wheel?? Basically i've been offered something but want to check it would be suitable first.

Thanks for your comments, all.

18x8s on mine with 225/40R18 and no rubbing issues.

I have same dimensions with no issues, on standard suspension for now

ive never had any probs with a 8 inch wide wheel, 225/40/18s and lowered and it was fine, and now 225/30/20 and still nothing

go 8x18s et35 mate :orb_danci and with a toyo or eagle f1 tread pattern they look nice n beefy too lol

below is the height i had it on 18s with no issues on the (et35 8x18s)

I wasn't suggesting that the damage was kerbing, just that 225s are reputedly cheaper than the OEM 205s.
