Headlight motor gone?

Featured Replies

I have just gone outside and changed my standard headlight bulbs for some Osram Nightbreakers, all went ok, but when I went to turn my lights on to have a look, I have noticed my N/S beam adjustment motor is making a repetetive noise which only stops when you turn the light off..

Any ideas??

Typical isnt it! You spend a bit of money on a little mod, and it ends up snowballing into bigger things!!

Yep sounds like headlight motor.

ShaydAl,

You may have just knocked the inner headlight unit off the arm that moves it up and down. Put your hand inside and see if you can move the lense up and down urself quite easily (as in just push gently with your fingers)

If it moves you have knocked the inner unit off the arm. all you have to do is take the bulb out put a finger through the bulb hole and gently pull back on the inner unit. you will hear it and feel it pop back over the little ball on the arm.

The reason the N/S motor is continuosly going is because they rely on the pressure (its actually a screw unscrewing and screwing iirc that pulls/pushes the lense to alter the light) and as it isnt tightening up it will just keep spinning.

I had this when i had a MK1 Octy GLXi and funnily enough it happend when i put in some new bulbs.

If you get stuck feel free to ask more questions and ill try to explain better as im typing this from memory

Thanks Carl, will check it tomorow.. :)

The threaded adjuster part doesn't go round , it has a flat to stop it going round when the motor drives a gear inside the unit around it. Had to get a new one when one died so I took it apart to see , it has a small linear potentiometer which I expect gives an output voltage relative to the requested position. If the motor keeps going I would imagine it has a terminal problem with the electronics inside . By the way I wouldn't reccomend taking apart a working unit , unless you are very careful there is a good chance it wont come apart intact !

New one was just under £30 from VW dealer

hth,

Dave

Mine continuously ran when i tried the headlight adjuster, wd40 in the motor worked on one, I had to buy a new motor for the other.
