Has it been modded already???

Featured Replies

Morning everyone, I took delivery of my 05 Furby VRS last night and promptly 'got used to it' over the course of a few hours.

A couple of things I wanted some advice on...

1. After about 70 miles of varied driving, my glowplug relay light started to flash. Apparently this indicates a fault with the plug relay system but after another 20 miles or so, it stopped. Seemingly not to return again. Any ideas? Obviously, if it appears again over the weekend its goin back to the dealership anyway but thought I'd see if anyone else has any clues? Could this be the symptom of something bigger?

2. Having taken it around most of Leicestershires country lanes as well as A roads and motorways last night I'm surprised by the throttle response, especially from 1200-1500 rpm. Obviously I know its a nippy little thing but having spoke to a few VAG owners at work and taken one for a spin this morning, he seems to think, because of the power delivery across the range, it may already have been chipped.

It has a full Skoda service history and the last owner was an OAP but the guy before him did 30k in 16 months and I'm wondering if he may have tweaked it a bit (His age is on one of the service records-very likely).

Is there a way of telling without diagnostics or rolling road? Can it be done through VAG-Com at the local Autohaus?

I'm not really bothered if it has, I'd just like to know, it'll save me some money very shortly ;)

Ta,

Rob

I think there is a map counter which can be read with VAG COM which tells you if the ECU has been flashed.

doesn't VAG COM also log things like boost, torque and power etc (I know we've logged these on bengie's 1.8T Octavia)

The other tell tale sign apparently is a juddering sensation through the car when sitting in neutral. Its not a regular motion, but it feels like an off center weight is fitted to a rotating component somewhere or like the gearbox is trying to engage a gear every now and then.

Only does it in neutral and if you depress the clutch it stops. One of the VAG lovers here said his Golf did it when he had it mapped because of the extra torque that was being pushed through the clutch. Anybody else experienced this with their Furby's?

I think a visit to the nearest VAG dealer and a swift backhander to hook it up might not be a bad idea.

Hmmm...

or check the vag com owners map for your area? sure someone would check for you

Flashing glow plug light is usually a sign of a dodgy brake switch under the pedal. Typical VAG thing.

Remap wise, hard to tell based on someones verbal description - anyone else live near you with a vRS that's a member on here? You can compare cars then. :D

It also depends strongly on the nature of the map. Some are savage lower down and as such will more resemble the standard map in terms of where all the power comes in. Ideally you need another (preferably standard) vRS owner to have a go.

try not to boot it under 2000rpm as the duel mass flywheel throws a fit and breaks, which sounds like exactly what has happened when you say it feels like it judders, new dmf for you i think.:(

Redundant quote deleted.

I'm in Nottingham with an unmapped Fabia vRS.We could meet up tomorrow if you like.

Mine judders on idle about every 5 seconds, and as far as i am aware mine is bog standard i bought it indirectly from Appleyard contracts as it was a company car. I don't think the judder has anything to do with a remap

I think I'd want to remain ignorant if my car was remapped by the previous owner. You could lose any warranty, and you'd definitely have to tell the insurance company.

As long as you're pleased with your purchase, what difference does it make?

Cool, cheers guys.

I'll be honest, it doesn't make much difference to me if it has been modded or not but obviously if it has then I need to be aware as it will mean things like the flywheel and clutch could need looking at much sooner than I'd hoped.

Booting it below 2000rpm does give some judder, especially at speed between the top 3 gears, I assumed this was just a consequence of the torque being pushed through the drivetrain though.

Many thanks to the dude in Notts, unfortunately I work away during the weeks and have the next month of weekends tied up with holidays/camping with family or friends and weddings (yawn)

I would really like to take you up on the offer though so might be in touch towards the beginning of September as long as you've no plans to visit superchips in the meantime.

Also worth knowing as you may not be insured otherwise...

I'd just check the plugs are seated properly. On my 05 vRS the injectors 'plug' has a tab to lock it in place so it shouldnt have come out. But who knows :)

Booting it at 2000 rpm makes it shudder in 4/5/6 whether mapped or not, mapping it may make it worse, true.

You can tell the difference quite easily between it being mapped and not. In 6th gear on a private road, the standard one wont pull hard to 3 digits, a mapped one does ;)
