vRS bike rack and sidewinds

Featured Replies

Hi

I've been doing some research on here and decided I need a roof mounted bike rack for my Fabia vRS.

I need a rack for two bikes, and wondered if anyone has done this and is it affected by sidewinds noticeably?

Any comments greatly appreciated!

I doubt it will have much more effect than the effect of sidewinds on the car itself. :) A loaded roof bike-rack is not like having a sail up there. :)

Na you should be fine but expect some wind noise

Thanks for these comments.

Not wishing to be rude, but are these guesses or based on actual experience?? :)

Does any regularly have two bikes on top of their vRS?

Cheers

I'm just basing it on the fact a bike rack isn't like a sale. There's gaps in it. And bikes too are also not like sails - they have gaps too. Compared to the side of a car which has no gaps, I would not expect sidewinds to have any discernable effect. I would expect economy to suffer a little though.

I would expect economy and sidewind wobble to be worse carrying a big roof-box, than a pair of bikes. :) I imagine if you put full covers over the bikes whilst transporting, you will suffer with sidewinds more.

I put two bikes on the roof of my octy vrs with no wind problems. I know the fabia is a little smaller but would not expect it to make too much difference. I use Thule roof bars and Atera bike racks and would recommend both as great bits of kit. I bought both through The Roof Box Company: sales and hire of Thule roof boxes and other brands of roof boxes, roof bars and bike carriers. Quick service and cheap price, they do some great deals on roof racks and 2 or more bike carriers.

If you're using decent bike carriers which hold the bikes very securely, you'll forget they're up there! As I mentioned in another thread, I regularly have two mountain bikes on my roof, and it's extremely easy to forget they're there. You shouldn't have any issues.

I regulary carry two bikes. Never had any problem with cross-winds. It's actually very easy to forget that the bike is up there. I use the Thule Aero bars and Thule ProRide cycle carrier which I would definitely recommend!

Seriously, there is no need to worry about the winds, the bikes are very safe up there..... It's low bridges you should be worried about ;)

Here's mine......

Marvellous

Thank you all very much for your contributions!

Just make sure the rack is really really tightely fitted, some years ago, on the M6, I was coming up behind a car with a bike rack on and when I was about 20 yards off them the rack started to slide side ways towards the fast lane - I just booted it and got past as the rack was sliding down the side of the car - it landed upright on the road and a pug caught it fair and square on - I reckon that it would have wrecked his radiator and his day, me, I was on the way to Burgandy so it would really have f'd up our holiday plans, so booting it seemed the correct thing to do. My main worry about catching it square on, apart from the damage it would cause my car and cut the holiday short, was, that following traffic might end up piling into me as I attempted to reach the hard shoulder and wreck more than the car and our holiday. Take care when using roof racks lots of people use them and don't have a clue as to the danger to others when they or their load slips off.
