Why is an 05 1.6 more expensive to tax?

Featured Replies

As the MY changes they sometimes tweak the software to get better performance/economy and presumably in this case, its dropped enoguh to lower the VED band.

Happens quite a bit on other makes too.

Yes the post 07 version of mine is cheaper too.

According ot Parkers, all 1.6 FSIs from 2004 are equal.

And if it's a software upgrade, why can't 2005 cars have it?

(sorry, just being frustrated by paying always more VED!)

Unfortuantely what's on your V5 is what counts. I might have been over-simplistic with the software comment, VW might have evolved the engine over that time - can the technical guys help?

Also I've yet to hear of a way you can get your car re-tested for CO2 emissions - whatever changes are made. Is it even possible?

Its the same with my Elegance 2.0tdi, my car falls into band C, whereas some of the earlier ones are band D.

The CO rating once set at registration cannot be altered, even if the car had a full engine transplant with the later version.

Thanks, that was my understanding too but I'm frequently wrong.

On the diesel is this to do with Euro 4 and Euro 5 compliant engines?

I think it must be. With the introduction of the London Environmental Zone diesel commercials have to comply with certain standards. It is possible to change these, presumably by having emissions checked, after an upgrade.which would need to be recorded by DVLA.

Edit. Looking at DVLA it seems to be possible, but only if the engine is changed.

Change to fuel type

DVLA will need written confirmation of changes to fuel type for vehicles registered after 1 March 2001 if:

  • your existing engine is converted, the confirmation must be on headed paper from the garage that carried out the work
  • a new engine is fitted, the receipt will be required as confirmation

Paying £185 pa for mine at the moment.
