Windscreen Washers

Featured Replies

My Octavia Mk I 1.9 TDi (2008) doesn't seem to have adjustable windscreen washer jets. Both jets are under the edge of the bonnet and are hitting this edge. All I get is a fine mist on the windscreen. This just smears the dirt that I want cleaned off and makes visibility worse. The garage I bought it from wants the car for the day to sort it out.

Both washer jets are made of plastic and are part of a panel that sits at the bottom of the windscreen and is the full width of the car. There is nothing that I could see to adjust this panel. Though access is limited under the panel, I used a mirror and torch.

It's annoying on a brand new car, that has no other faults to speak of.

Thanks in advance for any help, info or advice.

IIRC my MK1 (2006) had the jets fitted to the arms and sprayed as it swept across the screen.

My 2001 mk1 has the "fan" washer jets installed, so it creates a layer of water over the screen, rather than just a couple of jets of water. iirc the "fan" outlets are not adjustable. You may find yours are blocked by some limescale, etc - unlikely if new though. VAG have a specific wash solution they sell, but I have never used it!

i have same and assumed that was the way they where designed. (badly), and isn't a problem when at higher speeds.

I think it can be adjusted a bit, by trial and error by wiggling the "jet" mounts about.... but generally I think they are meant to just work!

VAG do a special yellow screenwash for fanjets that aren't used frequently but it smells like cats' wee. Once you get them cleared, they're fine with ordinary stuff as long as you use them once a week or so.

When I got my MK1 vRS. both the jets hit the bonnet. They are not adjustable in any way, but the solution is simple. The reason they are hitting the bonnet is the scuttle panel installation, if you remove the rubber from the front edge and make sure the scuttly panels are fitted correctly on the lower edge of the screen and long the front edge. Replace rubber, and the jets should be fine.

Let the dealer sort it out. That's what the warranty is there for. And as it is going in under warranty they will give you a loan car. New VAG windscreen washers aren't as good as they used to be, I had a brand new VW Transporter on hire the other week and they only squirted the bottom 1/3rd of the screen.
