Alloys Dilemma

Featured Replies

I've had some lovely alloys from ebay (vw) which apparently came off a chaps VW v6 4motion. Came with what appears to be brand new tyres, (Vredensein Sportmax I think)

(The lovely Bugatti alloys).

Unfortunately due to information limited on the auction, and in reply to my questions, I didn't realise it would turn out they wouldnt be a straight fit.

It turns out I got the PCD right (100x5).

Tyres turned out to be 205 55 R16', a bit big (but ought to fit, just not very low profile looking).

However the problem is that I noticed its ET42 so would need a 5mm offset. I've never done offsets before so not so sure about this and would appreciate any similar findings on fitting VW wheels.

Yeah yeah, they aren't bike wheels, what's wrong didn't they look gay enuff, or don't they match your leathers etc. I can take it :o)

So I am know at a dilemma, it seems some suggestion in places that vw alloys MIGHT fit with ET42, or maybe not ?? I don't want to risk messing up the safety of my wheels but would love to see them on.

I'm also unsure if with 5mm offset means I would get away with standard bolts (5mm doesn't seem like much)

If I can't use them they will end up in the sale section if anyone wants em, or back on ebay looking for about £200. I really can't be that arsed with too much hassle. It was just nice to have a 2nd pair to enable me to tidy up my original alloys and cheaper than buying new tyres.

Get some 5mm spacers and some longer bolts.

Hub centric or not ? It seems that 5mm tend not to be what is described as hubcentric.

Would these do/ be safe enough? Obviously I need 2 pair.

Alternatively they do some FK ones here....only marginally more expensive.

I have VW studs that came with the wheels including locknuts...don't know if they are the same length as mine or longer - so I guess it may just be possible I could get away with it (depending how long they are exactly)

Alternatively, I could go for the 8mm spacer total on the axle, this brings it within the skodas offset of 35-38 (4mm diff rather than 5mm) but still may be enough left on the studs to be usable.

what width are they? if 6.5 like oem fabia 42et wont make much diff as they will only go 5mm further into the wheelarch..

Very nice wheels - should suit your car very well. I believe the spacers above should sort out the off-set problem.

However, the tyres give you another set of problems you need to be aware of.

The OEM tyre size on a 16 inch rim is 205/45/16.

If you fit 205/55/16 (assuming they'll fit in the arches if the car isn't lowered) your speedo, trip computer, odometer, fuel computer, etc will all read incorrectly. At an indicated 70 mph on your speedo, your actual speed will be 75 mph (74.86 mph to be precise). This is because the circumference of the new tyres will exceed that of the OEM's by 6.94%, so every revolution of the new tyre takes you that much further down the road.

I believe, but you might want to check, that the ABS / traction control will still be OK.

yep, 6.5J it is...isn't there a danger theoretically of fouling on components like the suspension parts etc ?

Although I suppose when we are talking about the same width of tyre, that is somewhat unlikely ...

Yes, when you change from OEM off-set and tyre size.

I am aware these 4xtyres are suited to the Octy. (205 55 R16)

I could offset the alloys to suite the proper offset and keep these alloys, but just gotta get correct fitment tyres (205 45 R16) for them to work properly on my car. Pity as I like the tread pattern on these tyres.

If there is any interest on the tyres (or alloys complete with) I can put them up on the for sale section (with Pics)

Offset will be fine dont panic.

Tyres will need to be changed though, for a 205/45 16 same as the vRS runs.

just swap the tyres from your standard alloys onto the new ones and job done:thumbup:

I would, but I need new tyres too - that was why I got them :o)

Down to 2mm all around, self defeating really as I still need the 205 45's all round - but I do like the alloys, deffo worth keeping :o)

It meant to be a double whammy - new alloys, plus chance to refurb the existing a bit, plus the bonus of new tyres also.....

Ok, thats three reasons.....I can't count...

Reckon the auction was worth it for the tyres alone though - I am sure to go out and get these tyres as new would be at least £240.

Talking tyres has anyone noticed tyre prices go up on some websites ? ER30's are now £15 more expensive on etyres for instance.
