my turbo went on sunday and i have just found out that it has destroyed the intercooler and there is a horrible rattling noise coming from the engine.

i only have myself to blame because when it happened i was driving back from manchester to doncaster at max speed, because my little sister had been taken into intensive care. the turbo went but instead of stopping all i wanted to do was get back so i carried on.

the skoda garage has quoted me £1800 and thats if the engine hasn't gone!!!

is there any advise/spare turbos/intercoolers etc that you people at briskoda can offer i need to repair the car as cheap as poss!!

p.s. also as an afterthought what do people think about buying an extended warrenty and trying to claim on that. i really cant afford anything over £800 and i need my car for work so no car no income arghhh

p.p.s my sister thank god is on the road to recovery albiet not how i want, she still keep giving us little panick attack every now and again!!!

Glad to hear your sister's on the mend. I'm not sure how a blown turbo / intercooler could damage the engine unless something managed to get into the intake manifold, however if things have really gone West, a trip to a scrappy might be your best bet...

It is quiet possible that pieces from the turbo have entered one or more of the cylinders, destroying the intercooler on the way. The only way to tell would be for the dealer to remove the cylinder head and look inside, which will only add to the expense.

When mine went it did the same thing leaving the intercooler full of swarf.

However it was fine after a new turbo and intercooler and I would bet yours would be as the chances of anything getting near the pistons is remote.

£1800 is also about right for a dealer. You might want to seek out a specialist and use it as an excuse for an upgrade ;)

cheers guys, the dealer said that it was the worst case they'd ever seen!!! there not sure untill they've replaced them if peices have made it into the engine, does this happen often??

also an update, the skoda garage out of goodwill said they will foot the bill for the turbo, it has taken i little weight off my mind!!!

Yup, while it's bad, it's also the perfect excuse for an upgrade. Even if you don't want more power, using upgraded and higher spec parts will give you stronger motor.

If you go to a specialist you will probably find that the upgraded bits will be no more expensive than standard parts from a dealer.

IIRC - Devonutopia has my old SMIC for sale, and I have packed away my OEM turbo to bring to Reading Aug 2nd.

I have to agree with the above comments though - getting uprated parts will make you feel far better about this unfortunate incident....

The parts can be DIY fitted if you are handy with a wrench, saving you an arm and a leg.

If you have got bits in the motor then it's another story unfortunately.

I still have a SMIC here too, quite welcome to it, it has only been on the car for 10k ish IIRC. Turbo wise I cant help you unfortunately.

Whereabouts are you in the country?

For the bits to make it through the IC and into the engine you would have to be quite unlucky, but you might find a large blob of oil managed to get through.

Personally I think I'd get a second hand SMIC off one of the guys offering it to you here for and then buy a used turbo in good condition or a garret turbo from a specialist.

If you're handy fit it yourself making sure you use new oil pipes to the turbo and do a full oil and filter change before running the new turbo up. Possibly do a very short change on that of a couple of hundred miles just to get any bits.

That would probably cost you about £200 if you can get a good used turbo and then let you find out if the engine is stuffed for less than the garage would charge you to look inside it.

If you were to pay a local indy garage to change the parts you supply for your current parts I would think you might only be talking about 3 hours labour. (£150ish)

yeah that prob sounds like a good idea rather than the dealer skanking me out of my hard earned cash!!!!

is there any help on which car this garret turbos are on or where i could get a second hand on from, tried ebay but a dont have a clue which model/part number i need.

would i need a custom remap if i put this on? man this is stressing me out something i don't need at the moment!!!

Are skoda paying for just the turbo, or the turbo and all of the other work and parts which will go into replacing it.?

Skoda used garret chargers on the earlier fabias I believe but others will know more. In theory this means you shouldn't need a different map as they should be providing similar boost.

Even if you only get a second hand KKK in good condition that would still be fine until you were happy the car worked. You could then buy something bigger when you have the money and sell the KKK on.

The KKK really isn't that bad at all and it just happens people see more failures as more are used IMHO.

just the turbo, i have to pay for the rest, the turbo is £1000 plus vat then they said the charge for the rest of the work will be roughly £500 including parts and labour, i dont really want to upgrade as i'm young and insurance reasons as well as i have no spare money!!!!
