Life expectancy on OEM dampers?

Featured Replies

As said on the box really. 90% of my driving is on lumpy B roads and (until last week when they changed them) I've had 8 speedbumps on the driveway at work every day for 3 years.

Just wondering as I'm coming up to the 40k service whether there's any cause for worry/excuse to look at the price of coilovers. Nothing really feels amiss (not that I'd really notice, they've never felt great) You can hear a gassy 'pssssst' occasionally over speedbumps with the window down, but that been there ages and I think a few other people have the same thing?

Done the ARB and the console bushes, so apart from the rear brakes (which seem to be kaputt every single service) I'm trying to see if there's any surprise factors to budget for when the service/MOT comes around.

Cheers,

I have a box of Eibach springs sitting here. Still debating whether selling them for some KW v1's or just buying some Koni dampers is the next step. Happy to keep the standard setup for now if it's gonna last I think. Gives me more cash for wheels and stuff ;)

My local VW/AUDI specialist says he's done a couple of taxi's but not untill they were in the 150k + region! Given that my last 2 fiats both got/needed new shocks before they hit 60k i'm quite astonished that they dont wear out until 150k!

Recently having passed 80k I thought i had worn out shocks (hence asking at the last service), but 2 sets of rubber ARB bushes later and the knocking was sorted!

I won't mention FSDs, honest I won't :D

Would have thought past 60k, but it's really quite a difficult question to answer. A bit like 'how long will my tyres last' - depends on what stresses and strains they're exposed to.

But if you've not felt the ride worsen, I'd have thought they'd be OK for now.

Yeah, about 60k on the OEM dampers, half that if they have lowering springs fitted. :)

Tom - what have you got now!:P

back on topic!

Whats the side effects of worn dampers? my dads fabia has done 130k now, and the rides getting a bit more harsh. well it isnt as "rubbery" as my new fabia with only 7500 on the clock...:)

That.

Ride will get bouncier in some ways and more crashy/wallowey in others.
