quick question - PD engines

Featured Replies

I hear alot of talk about these PD engines, and also non pd engines

whats the difference? and anyone know how i can find out which one ive got? [x reg octy estate 1.9tdi slx(110)]

Nick

Yours is a PD, I can tell from this distance!

PD or Pumpe Duese engines use "unit injector" pump technology per cylinder to both pump the fuel at high-pressure and inject it into each combustion chamber.

VW announced a phased retirment of this technology in 2007 in order to focus on common-rail (CR) technology (one pump per engine rather that one per cylinder) which apparently make engines quiter and are easier for emissions control technology.

Boo Hoo - no more smoke!

ooo thank you very much for enlightening me

I don,t think an X reg 110bhp is a PD engine:confused:

VW diesel engine developments IIRC - 5-cylinder TDI 1989, V / VE in ????, TDI PD 1998/9?

What year's an X-reg?

late 2000

The 110 bhp is NOT a PD engine. Regular injection pump diesel, nowt wrong with that though.

I'd get your eyes tested.

Only the 130bhp version was a PD design , and they didn't appear in the Octy till 2003

I concur.... 110 is a not PD engine. I have the 2001 on a Y plate, so I doubt they would have fitted on older engine to my slightly newer car :-)

Hi!

I belive the 100hp 4x4 is a PD-engine to....:)

There was never a diesel 4x4 in the UK.

I thought the European ones had the 110bhp non-PD engine but I'm happy to be proved wrong

is a PD better performance wise or is it just purely a different way of putting fuel into the cylinders?

The PD is 130 bhp whereas a non PD is 110 bhp (at best)

So yes they are.

The ONLY Mk1 Octavia in the UK to have a PD engine is the PD130 variant found in 2003 on Ambients and above.

PD is a different way of putting fuel into the engine.

A TDI110 remaps very well and with the aid of a bigger turbo, some larger injectors and an FMIC would probably, IMHO, map further than a PD engine.

Elegance and above, although some tail end Ambient SE may have got it.

Meant TDI110 not PD110

My MK1 was a PD engine and that was 100BHP AXR engine. It was an 06 plate too.

confused me a bit there?...a pd engine remaps better than a pd engine?or did you mean a normal 110 remaps better?

the 110 non PD remaps better than PD he was saying.

An SLX is a pre facelift glass headlamp Octavia. The first PD engines that Skoda used was the 100hp in the TDi Fabia, the SLX Octavia pre dates the Fabia.

Correct, the last of the MK1 Classics had the 100bhp PD in it.

Depends what you call performance, regularly 10mpg less from a PD driven in the same manner is lower performance in my book....

The VE's can go up to 160 very easily with few mods, but as you say they didn't come out the factory programmed for more than 110hp.

Ultimately the PD can produce more power when tuned, but only a few more hp than the VE. 220hp pre-pd's are not uncommon.

I make that economy not performance.

Are you basing the 10mpg difference on 2 identically spec'd cars? (apart from the engine of course!)

I ask because my 2001 Octy Elegance (110) never went below an average of 60mpg, with 65mpg average being the norm.

But my 2004 Superb Comfort (130) struggles to get over 50mpg average.

I appreciate it is much bigger & heavier, both used long life oil.

I get ya. Technically, I was talking of the performance of the engine in producing the max KWH from a given amount of fuel. The VE's performance is higher, getting more killowatts from a gallon, hence more mpg. But I know what you mean.

As for identical cars, yes, I get to pick up & deliver most weeks so have back to backs in passats, Octy's etc. 90's, 110's, pd 100's, pd 115's, pd 130's, I have done a lot of driving in all of them.

5-15mpg drop on pd is what I see, all else being equal.

Just had a week with a Roomster 1.4tdi PD, bit tight as 2k miles only, I got 45mpg average. The same driving regularly shows me 55mpg in a 110tdi octy or passat which is also 200kg heavier. Given it's lower weight and smaller, more modern pd engine, it shows the difference in efficiency. When the roomster loosened up, it may match it, but given it's weight and size really it should be beating it!

About the worst I have had in was a PD100 passat. The best I have had in for mpg have been well run in (100k+) 110tdi's that were running well, on mixed driving I can't tell if octy or passat platform is better, I have a feeling the passat's aerodynamics and ride at speed offset it's slightly heavier body.
