Lights - Help Please!

Featured Replies

The lights on the near side of my Octavia are very dim and the offside are working perfectly. When you put the nearside sidelights on only they are working okay. I have replaced the bulbs and this makes no difference.

This has caused the car to fail on my MOT. The technician at the garage said it is either an earthing fault or a problem with the light switch. I am thinking if it was an earthing fault surely the sidelights would not work either?

I am just wondering if this is a common fault in the switch? Anyone have any thoughts they would care to share on this please?

Cheers

Yes that sounds like an earthing fault.Would not think it would be the switch.

I have checked the earth, it is ok, the near side lights front and rear are very dim.

One of the main earths is up on the bulkhead by the scuttle panel.have you checked/cleaned that one?

  • Author

I have cleaned the one next to the battery and the one next to the rear light cluster.

the one on the rear of engine at bulkhead is almost centre when looking at front of car.

Thanks, I have just checked and its not that either, this is doing my head in :(

how about the nearside indicator?

are you saying the sidelights on the nearside are ok, and the main and dip beams are dim?

  • Author

yes as the side lights work on drifrent switch but must have same earth

However the sidelights will draw much less current, so you might still have the same common faulty earth. How is the indicator on that side - I am not sure if they all use a common earth (Haynes is in the car, in the garage, down the far end of the garden!)

Also, are the lights controlled directly by a switch, or via a relay?

I have checked/cleaned all the earths, still not working. The lights are controlled through a switch.

Okay, I think I have fixed it. I have taken the switch apart and given it a thorough clean, it appears to be working now :)

Thanks to both mbames & Taxi 219 for your help and encouragement.

Oh good result (cheap) hope all stays well

indeed.... in the meantime I might have a look at the wiring diagrams for the lights just to help improve my own knowledge.
