ABS pump replacement

Featured Replies

Can anyone shed light on how much i'm looking at to replace an ABS pump on a Fabia 1400 AUB engine? The fault can't be shifted but am looking to get a second opinion from a skoda dealer.

Any ideas or advice please:thumbup:

Hi,

***It could be just a fuse (on top of battery) false, so please check this first. And read on for my story***

I had similar problem on my 1.4 AUB. No ABS, ABS light stay on. I brought it to a dealer, and their initial check comes back as ABS unit false. They quoted me ~£1100 part + labor(~1 hour).

The part is expensive, because the whole unit comes with a pump and a controller module. Although (according to my internet research) 99% of ABS fail points to the controller module, you cannot just order the controller alone.

Some guys (go search ebay or google search BAA) offer to rebuild your own ABS controller for about 100 pounds. The idea is that you remove the ABS controller while leave the pump intact in your car, then send the controller to them to rebuild. The car should still drivable, but I have to stress the point that by doing so you void your MOT (and many other things) at your own risk. However it is not so easy on fabia anyway, because the ABS is located right next to engine bay's side wall with the controller facing the wall. My local dealer even told me the whole unit has to come off anyway in order to just replace the controller, so it will result re breeding the brake system afterward (but I am not 100% convinced on this). Anyhow it is not quite a DIY job for me.

My internet research also revealed that sometimes it is just a fuse problem, but diagnose read out won't able to pick this up and gives the same false code as ABS unit false. So I visually checked mine, and looked fine to me.

So I decided to get a used part from a break yard, which cost me £275. And then I got a appointment with my local dealer to get it replaced. Guess what, dealer finally found out that it is just a fuse cracked before their attempt to replace the ABS!!! They are very sorry about they didn't pick this up initially, and said the diagnose procedure has been changed after my initial check 10 months ago, otherwise the new procedure can pick this up (again, not 100% convinced). But I guess they could replace my ABS without telling me the truth and still charge me more on labor, so I can't be too up sad about the fact that I spent £275 more in this case.

I don't know whether my case would help you, but I hope you can get your car's ABS fixed as soon as possible.

Best wishes

Louis
