I have noticed that if I lift my foot of the accelerator in top gear and allow the engine revs to drop to idle the engine revs then pick up again and the car actually gains speed. Is this normal?. I know that some marine diesels do this to prevent stalling if the engine is under load and the throttle is closed. Is this the same with the 1.9 tdi?

It has anti-stall, it will try and maintain idle speed even if in gear with the clutch up

Same in 1.4 petroleum... ;)

My 1.9TDI Scout does this. It's almost like a slow speed cruise control and will maintain a top gear speed of 28mph foot off.

I thought it was a fault and recently I had a recall to replace the "accelerator unit" so I thought this would resolve it. No difference so it must be normal.

Seems to happen on most modern engines, but it's more obvious on diesels as they produce useable torque at tickover.

Thanks for the replies. For those interested I have just towed my caravan ( 900kg) to the Scottish NW coast and back to Aberdeen. Average mpg 40 - actual as measured brim to brim. Tows very well.
