Car feeling down on power?

Featured Replies

Then I suggest you pay attention to your MAF. :D

Replaced mine at the weekend as I suspected something wasn't right. When the car was in at Jabba prior to the map they said it was down on power, only putting out 126bhp when they normally crack 135-140. I must admit it had felt a bit sluggish and very weather temperature sensitive in the last few months but I wasn't sure if it was just all in my head.

New part was £48 plus vat from ECP for a genuine Bosch one. You actually pay about £86 all in on exchange and so get about £30 back when you return your old one. You'll need the part number off the existing one when ordering as they only list the one for the Octy PD130.

The car didn't feel any different at first and MPG took a small hit right at the start, but after about 20 miles it started to liven up as the ECU figured out what was going on. Did a 160 mile round trip last night and even in 20 degrees the car pulled much more and I'm certain smokes a little less too on full chat. Averaged 56mpg (probably about 53-54 in reality) and I wasn't making any efforts to save fuel, which was about the same as before but with much more go (which I was regularly making use of :D). I reckon it's a good 10bhp - it really does feel that much better.

Mine had done 54k by the way so it would appear it does not take starship mileage for the MAF to get a little tired. :(

Cheers,

Chris.

Looks like im buying a new MAF today! i thought it was to do with the weather and temp, but its still the same! As if some power was missing!

Thanks for the post very helpful

Silly question prob... but what is a "MAF"..?

And what does it do.?

Never heard the term used before.

Thanks

Michael

Might get mine looked at then, my dad has a 115bhp focus tdci and I couldn't totally leave him behind.

Worth checking me thinks as his may be slightly over on power like ours are and coupled with the fact mine is lower on power......:rubchin:

Seeing mine used to leave his behind.....poo, more cost...:(

I think it measures the mass of air coming into the engine, the air temperature and sends signals to the ECU to control the fuel going into the engine......or something like that.

Mass flow sensor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mass air flow (sensor) - sits just after the air filter box. It's effectively a heated wire (ECU powered) that detects the temp and volume of the air passing over it as it varies the resistance of said wire. They are sensitive and the readings do drift with age.

For a car feeling down on power I'd say it's a good place to start, along with a new air filter (or wash your uprated one) and a good old Italian tune up. :D

Next thing on the agenda for me is to remove the intercooler and flush it out with solvent. It has to be gunked up....

I would have said mine felt the same but it rr'd at 145 bhp at the fly recently? but I also couldnt leave a focus tdci with the tuning box off... maybe its my driving though haha

mine went at 45,000 they're not exactly built to last

Why not do a search on here under 'cage mod' before splashing out 80-whatever quid? ;):D

I had a hole in mine after an 'altercation' with a grass verge and when they took it off the bottom was gunked up in oil and mess....

The car had only done 60k, so I would say that it's worth doing if you know how.

I could tell the difference of the new one virtually straight away.

I looked into this - there's the option of removing the 'cage' (looks quite messy and may ruin the air flow pattern in the MAF (it must be there for a reason) and also the use of silicone grease. For £50 (you get £30 back on exchange) and the knowledge that what I'm doing will definitely fix a dodgy MAF I was happy to cough up.

The other 2 are mods rather than correcting a faulty component IMO. :)
