Which VRS,L&K TDI/1.8T or Fab VRS

OK guys, been trawling the briskoda pages to try and help me get my sights set on which car to buy next when I sell me WRX. I had originally decided upon a FabVRs, but am also now considering an octavia (specifically the L&K). On my wish list is leather and cruise and ideally heated seats. all of which the L&K have standard, so the next choice would be which engine, either 130tdi or 1.8T, Whichever I bought I would remap so,

(1)Which unit its most reliable once mapped, as far as I can tell the TDI's seem to have more clutch/flywheel issues mapped than the 1.8T's? correct me if im wrong,

(2)What would straight line performance be like both mapped?

(3)After reading a few mpg thread, I have seen alot of good mpg figure for the 1.8T's. I am getting 26mpg at the mo, with reasonable fun driving and i think that is not far off the published figures, i tend to drive the majority of the week like an oap and then occasionally kane it. So, taking into account the lower mpg of the 1.8 compared to the TDI, but the TDI being more exp to start with, im not sure there is a case of the TDI?

go 1.8T then you can get it gassed if you want.

my mate had a L&K and it was nice but looked too normal, shame the vRS didnt have all the toys in the LnK. the furby isnt bad but dont think they got leather seats. the vRS has a good combo (for me as i dont like full leather)

Just my opinion here, but if you are into modding which you obviously are mate, and you are moving from the scoob for reasons of economy then why not go for

1.9TDi L&K

then buy some 17" vRS Spiders, a vRS front / rear bumper. Sort the suspension and fit a rear ARB and go for a remap. You get all the toys, the vRS looks, the PD economy and it should be good to remap to 160 ish + with a big slab of torque.

If not going for economy then I would go for the vRS as the 1.8T is an engine with a great pedigree and is supported by all the major tuning manufacturers.

Here is another thing just to confuse you :)

1.8T 4x4, change the wheels, suspenders, front rear bumpers and hey presto, 4 wheel drive when needed, better economy than a scoob and the 1.8T powerplant as a tuning base

thats another good option, but IIRC it will be Vhard to find a hatch version in this country as i dont remember them doin anything but the estate. might be wrong?

I have been doing a few calcs, (all assuming I get published combined mpg figure - which I have been able to get with all my cars).

Going from WRX to 1.8T id be looking to save £94.50/month and going from WRX to 1.9TDI save of £138.80/month, therfore a difference of £44 odd per month, now, by my reconing it would take a fair few years to claw back the difference between the initial price of the 130 against the 1.8T? bearing in mind im likely only to keep for between 1 to 2 years?

i think in some respects a normalish looking car is great when its been modded! confused folk more - haha.

I think you'll be happy with the improved economy over the scoob, whether you choose the diesel or the petrol 1.8T.

There is a silver hatch 4x4 Turbo often parked at a golf club near me. 4x4 turbos are great if you ever want to go for massive power but if I remember rightly they have a slightly lower mpg than the VRS due to the 4wd (even though the engine is 150bhp instead of 180bhp), that's one of the reasons why I bought a VRS over an Audi A3 1.8T quattro, they had the same engine but the Audi was around 29mpg whereas the Skoda about 35mpg :eek:

I know the diesel is more to buy, but its less on the tax, insurance and fuel, and will probably be worth more when it comes time to trade in, particularly with the way VED is heading to being an environ mental "envy tax".

The 150 4x4 is probably less economical because the Haldex just disconnects the rear prop from the gearbox, so all the RWD bits are still weighing more and spinning around causing mechanical drag.

I've had a mk1 octi vrs and now have a mk1 octi pd130 and they both have their merits. The vrs was a hoot to drive as standard but even better with some mods however the pd130 with some mods is just as much fun and more economical too.

I regulary get 48-50mpg out of my diesel and that does include the odd bit of fun plus the PD130's get the 6speed gearbox which is great for the motorway if you do alot of motorway miles.

Out of the list I would try to find a PD130 L & K then the PD130 Elegance then the 1.8t 4x4 Elegance.

An Octavia WRC has most of the extras you want :P

Last car I had was a chipped fabia vrs slow off the mark compared to the 1.8t but if you want to overtake or accelerate from 30 to 70 without having to rag to high revs felt alot smoother until you reach high revs.

My current car is 1.8t Elegance 1.8t 4x4 chipped feels very quick 0-60 but if I want to overtake I have to get I revs to get the power.

I it not only goes on mpg and cost but also how you like the power delivery :)

I've also got a 1.8T and am currently getting 30-35 mpg on my 'brisk' drive to work on long straight roads with few traffic lights so no stop-start, stop-start. I hit the magic 40 mpg one day :D That was stuck behind a learner driver though and I've not done it since. I usually get 36-39 on motorways if it's clear traffic.

I was surprised actually because I expected a turbo to drink the fuel like water but this is my first 'proper' car so I had no previous experience to compare. I had a Nissan Micra before which seemed to do about 300 mpg :rofl:

I do love the 1.8T engine though, it's smooth and quick, and I can't wait to get the remap which should improve mpg unless you drive like a loon, which I don't. Just a 'brisk' hoolie when it's full moon :thumbup:

Anyway, with diesel prices the way they are, is it really worth getting a diesel?

1.1x higher fuel prices, 1.6x better fuel consumption. You question whether it's worth getting the TDi or not!?

Exactly, plus servicing is a bit more I believe – correct me if I'm wrong. I was originally looking at diesels for the economy but all for higher purchase cost (or 2 years older) than the Octy I eventually bought. This was in December last year and then fuel prices started to go up, diesel more than unleaded. Although using V-Power negates that saving somewhat :D

Overall, I suppose it's dependent on how many miles a year you do and how long you want to keep the car. I think the OP was looking at 2 years so 1.8T probably works out best.

Thanks for all the info guys, i think the tax on the wrx is set to go to £300 next year,

rb320, to be honest im getting a bit boored of absolutely no torque on it!

I may have to keep it though, a crazy dealer offered me only £4600 against a fab VRS!, im positive glass book trade is £6800, will need to get a copy of the latest one...
